Hi, just wondered if anyone could help me with a rather strange problem which I've encountered with my DNS-321.

I store all of my music files on my NAS in Apple Lossless format to stream to a media PC in my living room, which of course necessitates my being able to import my CDs to the NAS from a computer as well as being able to make AAC copies of those files for loading onto my iPod (iPod Touches have dreadfully small memory capacities still). Anyway, here's the rub: I can't! Even though I'm connected with through an account with correct read/write permissions, anytime an action is perormed on a file using any of the Quicktime codecs (AAC/Apple Lossless etc.) iTunes spits out an "Unknown Error -39" and quits >:(

I know the permissions are correct as I can create, move and delete files and folders. Also, I am able to edit the tags on these files with iTunes and can convert the files into both mp3 and Wav with no problem.

I have upgraded to firmware 1.01 (though it was a problem with the old firmware as well) and iTunes 8.0.2 to no avail.

I should mention that this only seems to be an issue with Vista as my Mac converts and imports files with no problem.

Are you accessing you file in iTunes using the iTunes server of the DNS-321 or are you accessing them on a mapped drive in iTunes?

Do you only get this error streaming the apple lossless files?

It seems that I have a similar problem, but not confined to Vista, and not confined to Apple Lossless.  I recently installed a DNS-321 with the plan to store all my itunes files.  After copying existing folders to the NAS mapped drive, and resetting itunes to point to the NAS drive, tried to rip to the drive from a CD in a PC running Vista - I received the "unknown error (-39)" message.  Tried the same on a PC running XP and got the same message.  I can rip to a library on the local PC, then change the itunes library to the NAS drive, and copy the files from the C: drive (and then delete the copies on C: - tedious), but cannot rip directly to the NAS drive in any format.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Oops - I spoke too soon.  After posting this message, continued to browse various forums and found something on an iTunes forum that helped (but did not completely solve) the issue.  I should NOT have said "in any format" because I had not in fact tried them all.  I cannot rip in AAC format (the default iTunes format), but can do WAV or MP3 files directly to the NAS drive.  It seems it could be a permissions issue.  Still need to pursue, as it seems from most reports that AAC is "better" than MP3.
