Title: Quickly degraded signal--have tried everything.
Post by: dobeman73 on February 02, 2011, 04:56:25 PM
I recently put this DWA-552 in my Windows 7 64-bit system. At first, it ran great. Then the signal started degrading. Sometimes, an adapter reset fixes it temporarily, but not always.  I had a 2.4Ghz phone in the house and unplugged it and it didn't help. I've been on with the helpdesk (level 1) and they were no help. Had me re-install the driver. Oh, and that driver, once installed, says it's a different version than the install says it is.

I have the computer this adapter running in, sitting next to a laptop with an Intel Centrino Advanced-N6200 adapter and that thing is ALWAYS lightning fast. Even when a speed test on this DWA says less than a meg. in download, the Intel adapter is pulling 12MB download. So, I KNOW it's the adapter causing the issue.

Funny thing, if I look at the "Properties" of the two adapters in the "Advanced" tab of the device, I have far more settings for 802.11b/g signals in the Intel adapter. For the DWA, the only property for 802.11b/g signals is a "preamble" setting.

I'm at a total loss.

Are you running the setup program that installs the driver and the DLink connection manager?

Yep, I've tried both the 1.6 and 1.7 versions and have same result. The interesting this, which I went through with tech support, is that even though the driver version says 1.6 or 1.7 on the download page, when it's installed, it says it's 8.0.0.62 (for the 1.60 download driver).

The driver version in windows is that of Atheros for your wirless card. The v1.70 drivers that D-link has on there site only has the Atheros 8.0.0.332, as you pointed out. You can get some updated drivers from here *Link Removed* . The're Atheros 9.2.0.310. I've seen some improvments (it takes hours now before I loose sight of all 12 acesspoints I normally see, and have to reboot :-\).

Hope that helps!
