Thanks for responding Patrick
Camera is in a netbook(acer) and netbook is acknowledged with an IP address on router
my probem is all my ports are stealth and I cant get camera to broadcast over internet
webcam and software work fine
I have tried virtual server and all the port numbers I use do not work
I assume this is a simple fix
Any intructions you can give would be appreciated
Ric

OK, the camera is built in, I have never tried this before. You are trying to do a webcam broadcast under microsoft virtual server, is that correct? Being I have only used older versions of of virtual server on the PC for FTP purposes, does windows support video broadcast in the latest virtual server and what ports does it require to be open? I think you may need another piece of software to do the broadcasts, Googleing it I find nothing about virtual server being able to do this.

I am just a user like you, without trying to set this all up here and recreate it, I need a better insight to what you have. I do have over 20 years in IT, so I can try and help with a little patience from you.

You probably need to select a port in your program and then use port forwarding in the DIR-825 to "open" the port to access from the internet.

Thanks again for your help

My software program is webcam 123 I select a port in the setup then try to set same port in dir825 virtual server

Like I said I can see webcam image on netbook screen but when I check on url from webcam 123 that hosts my webcam there is no broadcast and the message states port not open

I have noticed on some of these posts that ports are stealh so my question is how can I get a port to appear as open?
Thanks

Use port forwarding in advance settings.  Don't use virtual server.  Your webcam program is acting as a server.

It's hard to say which ports are open on your PC.  I've used 1224 and 1361 in the past.

Is there any way to tell what ports are open?

Microsoft used to support a program... windows media encoder(wme) which was available free on their site that allowed you to encode videos or broadcast live video from webcam or camcorder.  It had a program option to find an unused port on your system.

However wme was replaced by Expression Encoder which is also free but I don't think has the option to find open ports.

Thanks
I did dowload expression encoder but it is not what the original free program was
I guess I need to change stealth status.... is this from router or from firewall

Using port forward opens the port in the router for access from the internet.  However you may also need to check for a software firewall and take appropriate action.

Just make sure the MS firewall doesn't block your webcam program and enable port forwarding rules for the port you selected in the router and webcam program.  To be safe you should enter the port # for both tcp and udp(once you get it working see if tcp only works) .  Enter the network IP address of the PC with the webcam and check the box to enable port forward.

Hi PC

Should I make sure MS firewall is not blocking program on all puters in network or just the puter webcam is on?
newbie question...Why are these ports all stealth?
Thanks

Pretty much doesn't matter what the ms firewall does on the other PC's because the router will forward all port access for the webcam port only to the PC specified in the port forward rule.

The ports are stealth because that's part of the router security. It helps prevent most types of external internet attacks to your PC's & network.

Thanks again
I will try this one more time
Just to reiterate

Make sure I use port forwarding not virtual server on router for IP for puter with webcam which should be on drop down menu in port forwarding rules
Use same port number as software setup says enter udp and tcp ports
Make sure MS firewall on webcam puter has this same port in its exceptions
Have I missed anything?

I'm not sure if the drop down will list the local ip address of the PC with the webcam.  It's easier to bring up a windows command line (cmd) and run ipconfig to see the ip address of that pc.

Hi,
yes, my router lists all puters on network
All other criteria I listed is correct?
Got my fingers crossed :)
Thanks
