I recently purchased this router because I was unable to keep the Linksys 610N from overheating (horrible design flaw)
For the same price it was able to run a 2.4 and 5 network and share the connected USB HD using the SMB service. Now I am unable to share the connected HD with the Mac or the 360 or the media center. It also stalls for a extended period when I 'connect' to the connected HD with my laptop. I think it's scanning for something?
I'm really hoping I did something wrong with the setup. Please help me out, all I see is mention that I have to install the software on my "PC"?

Please tell me this isn't the case. I bought the router on ebay so I can't return it.

Hey there!
I don't really keep up too much on the Shareport stuff, however if I recall correctly and last I heard, only one device is able to access the NAS one at a time. You have to make sure you disconnect too. And you need to be using FW's 1.12/13 and up for this. I recommend 1.15 though.
And yes, the shareport software ONLY works on PC's at the moment. Mac development has been talked about, and mentioned by Lycan, but with no ETA.
Hope that helps.

Well... that... makes the router kinda useless. Fantastic!

Sorry to hear you got it on eBay. I always advise people to purchase electronics such as routers, wireless cards, etc., in the store for this exact reason. If you need to you can return it. Makes it a lot easier.

I couldn't find it anywhere around here. Oh well, I'm ordering a wrt600n and selling this one.
Thanks for the help.

I would actually recommend anything in the DIR series, 655 and up.

That's fine and dandy and all, and you can recommend it ALL you want. However, the fact still remains that even though the other models have Shareport, it's still not going to do ANYTHING that he wants, where multiple concurrent users can connect to the NAS and do transfers.
Nice try though..

A) The Mac client is in the works and should be available soon.
B) The 1.0 version of the shareport client should allow for you to have multiple connections to the USB connected device.

That really doesn't help if I have a modded Xbox (like any real 'gamer') or a 360 or any other type of machine that can use a network share. Now the Wii can't connect on the 2.4 while I'm using the 5 and I'm stuck with a useless 2.4 router.
QOS? My old WRT54G had that and it reached further with a decent signal.
No offence to you mr Mod but this product is a failure in our house.
-
No, it only fails because it doesn't do WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO. There's a difference, and you should understand that right now.
First off, 5 GHz is useless indoors. 2.4 GHz will get you further, as it's meant for indoors. Lately we've found out that 5 GHz is BEST outdoors, and can really hit a good range.
Now, you obviously don't know what QOS is, because it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RANGE. It stands for Quality of Service, and applies to bandwidth management for clients. Certain packets take priority.
You probably meant to say Quality Control. There's a difference.
You really should do your homework before buying something. You obviously want a router that does concurrent 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If that's the case, then look at the DIR-825.
As far as your wireless signal goes, just because you put it on a higher band, that doesn't mean that it's better in one environment. You also need to understand that antenna placement helps a lot too. If you are trying to use "N", it requires all three antennas. Placement is KEY. And again, 5 GHz = outside, 2.4 GHz = inside.
Spend some time around here reading some of the tips and tricks we've mentioned in a lot of the posts. It's mainly repeating stuff, but it's all the same, and they DO work.

Indoor 5ghz was Microsoft's idea for multimedia. They figured if they could reduce crowding on the 2.4 band by even 10% we'd be in good shape. For MANY people 5ghz works indoors, just not as often as 2.4 because of the penetration issues with 5ghz.

I resent your statement, That really doesn't help if I have a modded Xbox (like any real 'gamer') or a 360 or any other type of machine that can use a network share.
A modded Xbox does not make you a real gamer. To your issue at hand. If you were a real GEEK you would KNOW that the best way to create a NAS in the home is to build a computer to do the job. I would suggest doing some research as there are free programs that will help you create one. Yes accessible by all your little toys. As for the USB support on the router (I will not call it a NAS as it does not serve that pourpose only a hybrid fix at best). The connection will only function from a windoes device sure as long as it is not Vista 64 (does not function for me at all) But then again it was a test for me an not a real necessity. I do not believe that Consoles are for real gamers anyway. If you want a hint about a NAS I will tell you to look on sourceforge as there is a very good one on there.

Ahhhh, I sense a presence in the force. Is there a avid PC gamer among us?

That would depend on the type of game. Or what is a "real gamer".

I wield the full power of the force. But I am not a Jedi yet. Hell yes, I am a gamer and have been sense Doom. That was when we had to create our own NE2000 ethernet network to play Deathmatch. These days games are a bit easier and just as fun. I play a few but am more dedicated to COD4 at the moment. Consoles are great for the kids, I do not have to build them a PC (my daughter who is 9 wants to play COD instead of playstation2 or Wii).
PC's are great and when you get tired of a particular game you can hack it and mod it and play a fresh version. Oh sure you can mod games for the console but you need to do that on a PC.
PC will always win
-
You have some good points, but in the end the dollar is the only point and we all know consoles are...well...killing in that area.
Not to go too off topic...
-
The problem with PC's is also their strongest point. Upgradeable hardware, and the cost there-in.
-
From what I understand, you have to install the shareport utility on a windows computer so you will not be able to use the shareport feature on a mac or an xbox.
-
shareport is currently only a windows app, soon to be released on Mac.
