Title: Fan stays on all the time with FW 1.01
Post by: peridoc on December 29, 2008, 07:38:50 AM
I have a DNS-231 with Firmware version 1.01.  My unit does spin down the drives properly and usually my DNS-321 reports that the system temperature is about 95 F/ 35 C.  My understanding based on the 1.01 FW Release Notes ("- Turn off Fan at 43 degree celsius: 43(OFF), 46(LOW,4050rpm), 49(HIGH,6390rpm).") is that at the reported temperature the DNS-321 should not have the fan on, yet it stays on all the time in a low state.  This appears to not be working as intended.

I think its a bug. My fan stays on sometimes too even when drives are spun down.

Do you have any users setup on your unit and configured in the Network access rules? If so are you experiencing any problem with your rules remaining after manually restarting the unit from the UI?

I have two users set up and assigned to a group "users" on my system.  In the Network Access rules area I have two shares set up with full access given to the "users" group.  I have not have a problem with this setup when rebooting the unit with regards to rules disappearing.  I do however have the problem of the "All Users" option not showing up in the Network Access Settings as a option.

My only issue at the moment with the unit (with how I currently use the unit - primarily a NAS share; no media server, ftp, etc.) is that the fan does not shut off according to what the release notes for FW 1.01 indicate and it seems to be a useless waste of power when the drives are not spinning.  I currently am in a 1 drive configuration, but will be adding a second drive very soon.

I have the same issue with FW 1.01. Fan never turns off. I keep the unit in a very chilly room. It's not just a waste of power, it's unnecessarily noisy, not to mention sloppy and careless programming. When I walk into my den, I clearly hear the DNS-321 fan.

System Temperature: 86F/30C

Mine runs a bit hotter. I think my fan sometimes comes on even when the hard drives are off. I shut down all the computers but forgot to turn off the NAS. I also shut down the big room fan and went to bed. About 20 minutes later the NAS fan came on and I could hear it in the other room. Its not so loud when you are near it, but it is high pitched and the sound carries.

My fan also stays on all the time even thought my system temperature is 95F/35C.  The fan does initially go off after power up, but comes on a couple of minutes later and stays on.

We are currently looking into this. Try reloading the shipping firmware then reloading 1.01 and reset the device to factoring defaults in the UI then reconfigure your settings. Do not load a previous config. Please revert back if this helps at all.

I set my DNS 321 back to 1.0 FW and then again to 1.01 with factory default settings.  Fan still stays on all the time.

My DNS 323 on FW 1.06 does shut off the fan as stated.  In fact, the fan has NEVER come on as the temperature has not gone over 39C due to a cool room.   I like the quiet and it was a simple upgrade from 1.05 to 1.06.

I also can confirm that this did not work.  I restored the default settings and then reloaded the 1.00 firmware.  Then I did another restore default settings and then loaded the 1.01 firmware.  I set back up all the settings I had before from scratch (not from a config file) and the instant that my DNS-321 went to spindown the HD, the fan came on and has been on since.  FYI...the temperature never went above 41 degrees C.  It is somewhat ironic that the exact time it went to spin the drive down the fan on the unit came on -- prior to that the fan was off.  Maybe a bug related to spindown?  Just a guess...

Any update on this issue?

I think until they fix this in the firmware, it will not work properly.  My fan still runs all the time.  Hopefully they are working on a new firmware that includes a bug fix...

Here's one more user who's DNS-321 fan always stays on.  My situation is the same as everyone else: FW 1.01, hard drives spin down normally, the fan stays on even when the temperature is low.

It's a bit of a pain since the fan is somewhat noisy.  I should note that, while the fan is always on, it's not always at the same speed.  Sometimes it spins up quite fast, and I'm not even certain it's related to the temperature of the NAS.

I hope this issue is addressed in a forthcoming firmware update, since the fan may be being used more than it was intended, which could cause early failure.  That would not be fun times.

I have had the same problem since I upgraded to fw 1.01 and have been checking back every few days on the Dlink support site for a fix, but there seems to be nothing. Please tell us when a fix will be made available.

Thanks,

James

Fan speed control worked well in FW 1.0.

After upgrading to 1.01, I too have noticed that the fan doesn't want to turn off.  Additionally, I've noticed that the HD rarely, if ever, spins down while idle.

I recall having this issue until I turned off all the AV related built-in servers on the device. (I currently do not use them)  Then my drives spun down with no issues.  This might be a good test for you to run though.

I have both a DNS-323 with FW 1.06 and a DNS-321 with FW 1.01 running in the same room with an air temperature of 67F/19C.  Both the 321 and the 323 have their drives in standby and no server services are running on either system.  Both systems contain one WD 500G drive and one WD 1T identical drives.

The 323 shows a temperature of 87F/31C and the 321 shows 109F/43C.  The fan on the 323 is always off and the fan on the 321 cycles on and off, but is off at the present time.

I would not expect to see such differences in temperature between the two units, so there is either a temperature calibration problem, a bad temperature sensor or a software error.  If it is a calibration issue, then the firmware should allow users to set an offset.

Does anyone else out there have two similar units in the same location?

I'm another user with the same issue - DNS-321 doesn't hibernate properly in v1.01. I believe the issue (at least for me) is the upnp server - when it's enabled (even with no connections), the DNS-321 stays active, but when I disable it, it goes into hibernation properly.

Chalk another 321 user who has the same issue.

What a waste of energy!

It would be nice to be able to reset the temperature limits without having to configure an email.

Mainly because getting the email to work is not easy!

Another noob here with this problem. Somewhere on this forum someone posted about "refreshing" the various servers built into DNS-321 to get the fan to shut down. I tried that on the server pages in the configuration web app (those that have a 'refresh' button), and it seems to have allowed the DNS to get some sleep (even tho' I left the itunes and upnp servers enabled). The fan is finally off.... Hope this will be a lasting solution, but I still look forward to a firmware fix.

Well, scratch that .... it worked for a few days but now the fan is back on (despite a temp reading of 37C) and nothing I do seems able to recover the silent bliss I had for a short while. DLINK, please fix this; otherwise my DNS will have to move to the garage ...

I agree...how about a firmware update to address this already.  I am trying to be patient, but this is taking a looooooong time. :)

I've reached the conclusion that _my_ DNS-321 is actually working as advertised. Seems it took a few weeks but now it shuts off whenever the temp reading falls below 44 C, and kicks back in at 45 C. Imagine that!

My temps are usually around 114F and my fan is hardly ever on. There is on occasion when i'm running a backup that it will kick on low. It stays on for a very short amount of time though.
