Title: wireless 150 router
Post by: cors187 on February 06, 2011, 12:42:57 PM
Sorry if i posted in the wrong section, i could not find a DIR 300 thread.
I have the DIR300  150 wireless router.
It works OK, but i have somewhat of a problem with how it works.

We have cable into the router WAN only. We upgraded to a new ISP while i was visiting Australia and when i came back everything was pre configured. The ISP removed our old modem as it was no longer needed.
We have unlimited download.
We have a desktop comp wired into LAN1 and I use my laptop for wireless conection.
My problem is with how downloads are allocated between the desktop and laptop.
We often use speednet test and almost all the time the desktop scores 17 to 27 Mbps on the test.
My vista 32 bit laptop only gets a maximum of 4-5 Mbps max using the wireless and also i test using it wired into LAN1 or LAN2 and it is always 4-5mbps maximum.
Why is my laptop capped at this speed? has it got something to do with the router setting?
THats not  the only problem. When the desktop is downloading on the internet i find my average 4-5mbps is reduced to 500-700 Kbps and i cannot downlaod anything.
How can i cap the LAn(17-27MBps) so my wireless can atleast be usable on the internet?

Dir-300 with 150mbs ...?! are you sure ?

PS: your laptop wireless adapter is g or n? (at 4-5 mbs seems to me n...)

DIR.300 150 wireless is on the cover. it doesnt say 150mb

The wireless adapter on my atheros AR5006ASX wireless card says in configuration
802.11b preamble

The Dlink advanced wireless setting shows 802.11mixed n/g/b

i understand it can be a bit of a bad situation to help someone with wireless but if anyone can help me understand how to remedy the desktop LAN taking all the download and leaving my wireless laptop with screen freeze is most welcomed.

regards

DIR-300 is a wireless class g ...this means only 54mbs

if you have a wireless router which support class n (DIR-600 for example) ...also the laptop shouls support this...in order to have 150mbs.

you say you laptop card is class b...

anyway it is possible that your cards support some turbo mode (also router support?!)
...
try to search on the internet...

The Dlink advanced wireless setting shows 802.11mixed n/g/b

...this are the settings of your router...

...try to look on Status/Wireless...you will see there the real speed (by the way can you make a print screen?)

as you can see mode is 11g ...in this case is 54mbs max. speed (status shows 48mbs status in fact...this is depending the distance/obstacles etc.).

So what your saying is the router is ready to do 54mb and so there is a bottleneck situation somewhere else? This considering my top speed has only been 4-5mb?

4-5mbs is a good very good speed (wireless) in fact...

What about the condition of the desktop LAN1 robbing all the downloads and leaving the laptop with 500kb?
How can i rectify this situation. When i do have 4-5mb download i can stream. My sisters desktop is a torrent monster and i need to figure out how to limit it?

So i have discovered that the dir:300 router is limited in its options.
i cant find anywhere to limit the LAN(100mb Duplex) so my wireless (54mb) doesn't freeze up on downloads because the LAN has priority .

Anyway , here an example of why wireless routers and not all the same.
Next router i get i would hope there is an option to direct and prioritize the WAN > to LAN or Wireless.
