Title: nintendo wii and 655 router
Post by: panda349 on February 07, 2011, 02:28:37 PM
my nintendo wii does the search for the wireless connection.  it shows the dlink icon and i click on it. i get an error message saying cant connect to internet.  i googled my problem and i found out that i have to change some settings for the router.  i have to change something to AES but i dont know where to find that.  any help would be greatly appreciated.  links with photos how to change the settings would be appreciated.  Thanks

Log into the router as the admin.
Click the Setup Link on the top of the page.
Click the Wireless Settings on the left side.
Press the Manual Wireless Network Setup button.
Here is where you will change things.

Make sure you have at least G and N in the 802.11 Mode box as the Wii is a G device (at least mine is not sure if newer ones are N).

Security Mode: WPA-Personal

WPA Mode: WPA2 Only
Cipher Type: AES

Thats where you put a unique password so that only you can connect to the wireless network.  You will use that password on the Wii when you connect for the first time.

Go to your Wii and see if it sees the router.

haven't tried it yet.  i noticed on the left top corner of the page that the router model number isnt the dir 655 model.  i think when i had my computer repaired the person installed his router on my computer.  now i cant find my router cd to reinstall my router.  dont know if i really need to use the cd for that.  i didnt use the cd the first time i installed the router. i called dlink and the helped me with the setup (settings etc).

Why do all that search?

What I did is reserve an IP for the Wii (MAC address can be found in the networking pages of the Wii) then entered the SSID and security into the Wii to match what I had in the router.

Took all of maybe one minute.

I presume that you have set up the security on the router yet?

You'll find this under Setup/Wireless Settings/Manual Wireless Settings/Wireless Security Mode on the router.

Once you set this up, use the password you entered into the Wii. I would use WPA first to test.

I'm wondering if your Wii isn't set up correctly if it can't even get Internet even without security being set.

if i put the MAC address from the wii into the router settings would that maybe help to connect to the internet?    ive heard that dlink routers have alot of problems too.

You could try that and also try give a static IP address.
Did you try the suggestions?

Also in the router setup pages, make sure you go to the Advanced tab and select  Advanced Network on the left hand side.  Make sure Enable UPnP is checked.

Did you follow the instructions at the start of the thread?
Set up the router following early steps then go to the Wii and enter the password that you setup on the router.  The word you put in for the"Pre-Shared Key" on the wireless setup will be the word you use on the Wii as the password needed to connect to the wireless.

Do you have any friends that also have a Wii?  Maybe they could come over and see what is going on,  its hard to troubleshoot things when you can't physically see what is happening.

You said in an earlier post that you weren't sure if you were running a DIR-655.  Can you verify what router you have, the hardware version and frimware version?

This is the post I was referring too.  The hardware version will be listed at the top of the router setup pages right next to the firmware version.

I don't want to sound rude, but you may want to get someone to come in and help you as you seem a little over your head trying to set this up.  It really isn't that hard if you followed the steps provided here.

I know you said in another thread that you have AOL, that may be part of the problem too.  Without being there to see exactly waht you have for your Internet setup its hard to troubleshoot from long distance.  Did they give you a cable modem or is it a modem/router setup? Or is it a DSL setup? Or did they give you some kind of spefic box that they only use to make your inital Internet connection?  Like I said with knowing your exact layout of things it hard to go beyond basic information to get you going.

I agree with Dave,

With out some detailed and precise information about your set up, it's difficult to help you get your system going.

Please check to see if you have anyone with some or experienced knowledge like a neighbor, friend, or computer service company that you can talk to and have them come to your house and help you get everything going and running for you. I don't think there is anything wrong with any of the the devices here, it's just seems to be getting it setup correctly. Cables and devices. And don't let them tell you that DLink makes bad devices either. They need to prove to you that any one of your devices is bad before you have to try something different.

Can we ask you what part of the world you live in?
Theres got to be some places or people around you that can come to your house and help you.
