Title: Which 2TB drive
Post by: Miklos on February 10, 2011, 03:09:35 AM
I've been reading anything I could find about this subject but have not yet encountered a definitive answer.

So here it is - which (current) 2TB drive works flawlessly with the DNS-323 in RAID1 or RAID0 (not JBOD)?

The local hardware pusher has the following four available:

Hitachi Deskstar 2TB 7K2000 (HDS722020ALA330) 3.5-inch 7200RPM 32MB SATA 3Gb/s
Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green (WD20EARS) 64MB Cache, SATA 3Gb/s IntelliPower Hard Drive
Seagate Barracudaź Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache Hard Drive (ST2000DL003)
Samsung 2TB (HD204UI) Hard Disk Drive

All are within same price range so which brand doesn't matter to me. None of them is listed in the supported hard drive list, which is why I am making this post.

One note - the Hitachi is listed as true 512b sector size and the Seagate is listed as ture 4096b sector size in the datasheets - while both WD and Samsung lists 512b through emulation.

I'm using WD2001FASS... great drive and 512b sectors.

Can't go wrong with WD, except for advanced format drives so stay away from EARS.

The Caviar Black IS a higher price point, but well worth the investment I think.

Just got this from Hitachi customer service:

Thank you for contacting Hitachi GST Technical Support Center.

The 7k2000 model should be a true 512 bytes but NOT 4kB sector size emulates 512 bytes.

That 'should' does not inspire confidence  ???

hehe... My thoughts exactly.
I have often had bad luck with Hitachi drives.

Another update from Hitachi technical support:

Yes, confirm it's a true 512 bytes size.
Which means it "should" work fine with the DNS-323.

I'm gonna buy two and find out :)

Are the drives I got! So far they are working great but they are advanced formatting but claim they have this smart allign technology that makes it a non issue... not sure.

What RAID configuration are you using? And are you still happy with your choice of WD2001FASS?
