Title: Upgrading Firmware on DIR-655
Post by: Steve98033 on February 13, 2011, 09:19:50 AM
Hello.  I am new to this forum (and to D-Link routers, having purchased my DIR-655 at the recommendation of a friend).  After having a helluva time setting up my router (I have a Mac, so the Setup Wizard feature on the CD wasn't usable), and not being that much of a "techie," I am a little leery of   upgrading the firmware on my router.  My question is:  if I do upgrade the firmware, will I be faced with having to set up the router all over again?  Or will all the current settings, which at this point are obviously working or I wouldn't have gotten to this forum, remain the same?  Please forgive my ignorance on this and if there is a previous posting answering my question, I'd appreciate being directed to it.  Thanks for any help.

What firmware is on the router now?

You can save then reload your config.

Tool > System > save configuration

Thanks for the reply.  Current Firmware is 2.00NA.  I'm also wondering if it's that necessary to upgrade to the next level (i.e., what the benefits would be).

If your router is working well, keep it where it's at. Theres no reason to upgrade unless you are having problems then you need to trouble shoot before upgrading to see if the problem can be fixed. Your not missing out on anything. If it works, DON'T FIX IT.

Actually the B version update did have some things that the OP may want.

1. Added ALG.
2. Supports IPv6 Spec 1.12R.

Thanks for the replies.  I have to confess that I have no idea what adding "ALG" etc. in the firmware upgrade will do for me and my humble little home network, so I am inclined to not fix what appears to be not broken.  But I would like to know what ALG and IPv6 Spec 1.12R means in plain English.

Click on them:

ALG (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application-level_gateway)

IPv6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6)

Right now of the two you may only need ALG.

Don't know about the OP's router, but mine didn't use the Daylight Savings Time switch properly. Regardless of other settings, the switch just moved the router time ahead 1 hour. This was fixed with the firmware update to 2.01.
