Title: Router slows down the download speed
Post by: robertMN on February 18, 2011, 11:49:50 AM
When I connect directly to my dsl modem, I am getting better than 5 megabits/sec. which is what I should be getting for download speed.
When connected thru the router, I am getting about half of that.
My wireless connection speed is 54 megabits/sec, so that is ok.
I cannot get any connection when I hardwire the connection from the pc to the router too.
Are there some settings to increase the throughput speed?
Thanks

Are you using DHCP or Static IP addresses for your connected devices? It's recommended to use static.

Does your router have Advanced DNS Service enabled? I recommend disabling it and making sure that the Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual. Ensure DNS relay is enabled.

Make sure cables are in good condition. Swap out cables.
Shortest cable between Modem and router is recommended. I use a 1footer.

How are you checking the speed? IT's only recommended to check the speed of your internet by using wired, not wireless.

Is your LAN card on the PC good? It should be set for auto networking so it will gain the IP addressing information from the router. Don't use manual static settings there. Try a different Lan card to be sure.

Hi robertMN,

There is a Disk that came with the D-Link Router. Insert the Disk in your DVD or CD-RW Drive and play it. Follow its instructions for setting the Router up for the first time.

The DSL Modem is not recognizing the D-Link Router and the Router does not recognize your Devices.

I am not having recognition problems.  I only have a problem when I connect the same device two different ways, ie. wired and wireless.  That makes it hard to speed check with the pc.
Info:  I use http://www.speedtest.net/ for the speed test.

Have you changed or messed with any of the following settings:

WAN Traffic Shaping Pg 33 Go with Auto, the router will detect this for you automatically after a reboot
QoS engine Pg 33
Internet Port Speed Pg 47 - I used Auto here as well

My DSL detected as xDSL or other frame based relay
Upstream was auto set at 695Kbps

My speedtest and speakeasy speedtests are always the same.  I get 5.1 down/655 up wired or wireless.  Throttled of course by SBC, 6.0/768 service.  Avg ping is 17-30ms.
