Title: Easy search can't find DNS-323
Post by: timeout on February 19, 2011, 01:19:31 PM
Hello,

I read a number of post in this forum and I didn't any solution of this issue.

I have the last version 4.7.0.0 and I have no firewall and I can communicate with
DNS-323 through my browser and with smb.

I use a router in my network but I'm not sure if it (the router) can cause this
problem.

Any help would be appreciate.

Regards,

What does "version 4.7.0.0" refer to?  In the year that I have been learning about and using a DNS-323 I have never seen this version mentioned.

When you communicate through your browser, do you see the login screen asking for a User Name and Password?

What is the OS of the computer you are using to run the Easy Search Utility?

Is your router set up to perform DHCP and issue a IP address for the DNS-323?

In Quick Install Guide that comes with the unit, page 7, it says the unit will default to 192.68.0.32 if it does not receive an assigned IP.  Have you checked this IP address?

The most common cause of Easy Search not being able to find the DNS-323 (assuming that the DNS-323 and the computer on which Easy Search is running are connected to the same network) is a software firewall or security suite running on the computer.

If you don't know how to configure your security suite or software firewall to allow Easy Search access to the LAN, uninstall (note - uninstall is not the same as disable), run Easy Search, and then reinstall your security suite.

Yes I can and I can access the configuration through the browser like I said in my previous post.

Windows XP 32 bits.

Yes but this not the issue because I can connect to it using my browser.

Not the problem see above.

This is not the case, I have not a security suite. How can I see it. I think that Easy Search send a
broadcast packet to locate DNS-323. Do you know what kind of packet is send ?

It uses a broadcast packet - and the only way for it not to work is for something to block that broadcast packet - and the most likely thing to block said broadcast packet is a security suite or software firewall.

Ok I could see it with wireshark, this a multicast packet. I repeat, I have no security suite in my
network or my computer. But I used vlan and the DNS-323 is on his own vlan so that's the problem.

Thx

don't worry, as far as i see it, the easy search utility is not supposed to work.. i have never seen it working nor have two of my friends who have dns-323 units. different versions, different firmwares, over lan or straight cable connection, doesn't matter. and we are not exactly computer illiterate people. as long as you have your web access and are able to get telnet/ssh working, it doesn't matter much.

Why not go back and read my post?  I could make the statement again, and you could keep on telling me that you have no security suite, nad it wouldn't make my statement any less accurate.

What I said was  - the only way for it not to work is for something to block it - and the most likely thing to block it is a security suite or software firewall.

I didn't say that a security suite was the only thing that could block it, and the DNS-323 is a consumer device, normally found in a consumer LAN, where VLANs are rare - as a matter of fact - my first post had a qualification in it ...

assuming that the DNS-323 and the computer on which Easy Search is running are connected to the same network

technically, if you're using VLANs and the DNS-323 is in it's own VLAN, then it's not on the same network as the computer running Easy Search.

Thanks fordem,
I couldn't get Easy search to find the Nas on my Windows 7 64 Bit PC, even though I'd disabled Comodo Internet Security, it turns out that it needed to be uninstalled. My PC could then see the NAS and I could then reinstall the security software and am now in business. :)

You're welcome - I don't know why some security suites work that way, but I know that they do - after many hours of frustration.
