Title: Random disconnects lasting 10-20 seconds
Post by: Tactics702 on January 14, 2009, 02:56:19 PM
Well the topic says it all. So far this router has been nothing but trouble for me. I was on a DLink before that worked perfectly before my dad decided to make an upgrade. Ever since we got it I get randomly disconnected from Xbox Live and any game until I realized while playing on the computer it is randomly disconnecting all of the internet. Now before on the past router disabling UPnP solved all of the problems, and it's not so with this one. I've fiddled with all of the port fowarding, DMZ and everything you can name and nothing has stopped this yet.

My dilemma is I am absolutely stuck with this router other wise I would be disposing of this pain in the neck swiftly. So not only and I being disconnected from the internet but it almost seems as if this router may be disconnecting my actual modem seeing as it has been off and on since this routers been installed, any help would be great cause I am at the end of the line here and have just about had it.

Have you looked around in the forum posts (search for Xbox) for possible solutions?

Also, a post of the router log for the time of disconnect would be helpful.

Please give us more detail what you have done to try and fix this issue.
- What firmware are you running?
- Who is your ISP?
- is your connection cable or DSL?
- What settings do you have checked in the Advanced firewall settings, networking settings etc...
- what does you logs say?

Please give us more detail what you have done to try and fix this issue.
- What firmware are you running? 1.21, I have tried them all.
- Who is your ISP? Road Runner Bright House in Tampa Bay.
- is your connection cable or DSL? Cable.
- What settings do you have checked in the Advanced firewall settings, networking settings etc... I have tried them all.
- what does you logs say? Also I have run logs through Ethereal a program that reads internet activity and the only thing I was getting off of that was that the router was spamming my dads computer asking for a workgroup name, I resolved that problem and now it has gotten worse. It's disconnecting more frequently every 10-15 minutes and staying off for a few minutes.

The logs that would be helpful are the router generated logs.  When you login to the router the first screen should have a link to the "logs" on the left hand side.  The most important log info would be around the time of a disconnect.

Here is a capture from Ethereal a program that records internet activity, this is as I was being disconnected.

Device on 192.168.0.196 is requesting the disconnect. It's not the router initiating. Any guess on what you have connected on that IP? If it is a wireless device try setting the router to enable wireless partition (wirless devices cannot communicatie with eachother).

It was a wireless computer downstairs, I checked the WLAN Partition and saved the settings. We need to give it some time but I will be monitoring what's going on.

It didn't work and it's still happening... It's the exact same message.

Like I sais, the wireles device is requesting the disconnect. Have a look at the driver on that device, because the router is just responding to a request, not initiating it.

Switch to firmware 1.11 and see if the problem goes away...

Nothing has worked so far and trust me I've exhausted all of my trouble shooting abilities. This off that on, that off this on, nothing has worked. What the heck is going on with his computer that makes it want to keep reconnecting like it is???

Have you disabled auto channel scan and manually set the router to a fixed channel?

Setup -> Wireless -> Manual Wireless Setup -> Uncheck "Enable Auto Channel Scan" -> Pick a channel 1-11 -> Save Settings and reboot the router

Didn't work, would your next recommendation to be go get a Linksys that actually works?

No not that brand... Faulty router is this router still covered so can get another one from DLINK like A4.

Reason for the fixed channel suggestion is because the symptoms you describe sounds a whole lot like interference.  Things such as microwaves and cordless 2.4GHz phones can do that; and if auto channel scan is on and someone answers their phone (that's on the same channel), the 655 can hop to another channel causing a 10-20 second drop every time.  And if your 655 hops back to the channel it was on when the conditions get better this can keep happening over and over.

I'm in NYC with about 25 APs in range of my DIR-655 and had to turn off the Auto Channel Scan because it kept hopping trying to find a better channel.  In the end I had to run a program ..

... and was able to make a more informed decision about what channel to use.

Hi Tactics702,

Are you using all the programs that came with the D-Link Router, like Network Magic, which came with D-Link DIR-655 A3 Router? Turn off the Network Lock / Network Filter until all computers and devices are securely linked to the Router.

Also, a Bad Transmission Channel can cause a poor connections and rapid disconnects for the Wireless Computers. Turn off Auto Channel Scan and manually run the different channels until you find one that works.

This has absolutely nothing to do with "symptoms", NOTHING. It is dropping connection from a new message I've detected through my internet capturing device Ethereal and I will post a screen shot as soon as it drops the connection again.
