Title: Connection Problems
Post by: xkrazzy on February 19, 2011, 11:02:20 PM
Every few days or so I find that I have to reset my DGL-4500 because I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. Within a few seconds of being reset my internet works flawlessly, but it is quite annoying to have to constantly reset it when my old school Linksys router never had any problems. Does anyone know why this keeps happening and how I could fix it?

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Make and model?

What current firmware version is loaded on the 4500?
How are you connecting to the router? wired or wireless?

I'm using cable. My modem is a Motorola SB5102. My firmware is 1.21NA, and I'm using a wired connection. I use a wired connection for my desktop pc and wireless for 2 laptops.

it's been known that v1.21 on some routers was hanging the router. I would go head and save ur current config to file then do a factory reset, update to v1.23, do one more factory reset, then see how it goes. Let us know.

I did everything mentioned. I'll let you know within this week if I continue to have any problems.

I would set the WiFi mode to single mode G if you don't have any devices that use A/B or N. If you have some N, then go mixed G and N. Keep us posted.

I came here looking for a solution. Im having the same problem. I have to reset the router at least once a day sometimes 2.

1.ISP service : Charter

2. I use cable

3. Dlink Modem DCM-202.

I would like to add both the modem and router are both brand new. I bought both within 1 month.

Rite now im hard wired to modem no router !

Let me know what you did to fix this problem !

What Version of firmware is loaded on the router at this time?

What HW version is it?

How are you connecting to the router when normally using the router in line with the modem? Wired or Wireless?

What devices are connected to the router?

Are there any log entries?
Can you test Single mode G at 2.4Ghz.

When the router goes down are you connected wired or wireless? I'm curious if the router does with with the WiFi set to OFF for a test. Can you confirm this? Yes I do understand that your wanting Wireless to work well. Just need to see if the router is seeing the same thing if WiFi is set to off. If the router is doing this when WiFi is off then need to track this issue if we can.

Also when you did the update, please detail us the steps you took. It's recommended to do the following"
Do a factory reset from the web page tools.
Upgrade the FW.
Do one more factory reset after the upgrade.
Test.

sry been really busy ! I been running off the modem for past 2 days.

I setup the router like you asked and turned the WiFi off .

My computer is connected through wire. I only have iphones and Apple TV connected through wifi.

I checked and their about 5-6 wireless routers in area! I dont have cordless phones.

as far as log entries I checked the Status Tab. it says it has 2000 log entries ! dont know what that means.

well as you can see internet is up rite now..hope it stays up !

Will keep you posted !

Ok, take a look at the Log entries themselves under Status/Logs both with WiFi off and on. You can post a sample of the entries here if you want to.

After you have tested the router with WiFi off for a bit, turn on the WiFi, Single mode G @ 2.4Ghz and then try the iPhone 4 only. Leave off other Wifi Devices for testing. Since you said you have other WiFi in the area, lets try changing channels for this test. You'll need to try each one if you can. Start with 11 and work your way to 1. Let us know if you see any connection problems using these settings.

If your router and devices are in close proximity most of the time, you could lower the output radio power as well and test. Sometimes having the default power set to high may not work as well since there are other radios in the area. This will make the WiFi radio foot print in your house smaller and may lesson the interference.

I presume while on wired the router will and should remain stable.

Keep us posted.

I just wanted to report back and say it's almost been a week and I haven't had any connection problems since the update.

However I do have another question I think you could help me with. My router is at the top floor of my house, and I have a laptop on the next floor directly under it. Is there any way I can improve the wireless signal for that laptop? I already have one of the three antennas pointing downward so that the laptop can get a better connection.

What wireless modes are you using? If you can move to Single mode G at 2.4Ghz and try it. Or if you need N, try Mixed G and N at 2.4Ghz.

The materials in the house maybe affecting how the signal is getting passed. If some of these modes don't work well down there, I would suggest getting an AP or relay down there to help the signal.

Glad the router is working better since the update.  ;)

What version is your iPhone. Does the ATV do N mode?

Can you tell what modes the other routers are broadcasting?

Seems like this is only happening with N.

I have an Iphone 4 . Yes AppleTV2 does support wireless N. I dont know wat neighbors are on how do i check?.

Also when using Apple  TV , downloading on computer and browsing internet. the router disconnects.. Does that mean ..too much traffic and switch channel?

What happens if you set a manual channel while using N mode?

There is an application that you can run to see all near by Wifi and what they are running.

SO FAR !

Devices connected to wireless
   1. Apple TV (In living room/15 feet from router) (supports wireless n)
   2. Iphone 4 (supports wireless g not wireless n)
   3. Iphone 3gs (supports wireless g not wireless n)
   4. Desktop Computer (hardwired to router/NO wireless. In bedroom2)
   5. HP laptop ( I hardly use this/collecting dust atm)

NO landline phone so no wireless phones(besides my cellphones).
NO bluetooth keyboards. (in case any1 ask/its a wireless connection ::))

Wireless in the area (5-6 wifi spotted/seem to be all on on channels 1-6)

Settings I have tried:

Wireless n @ 2.4ghz or 5ghz
  1. If I set to autoscan works for a while but eventually disconnects!
  2. If i set to manuel channel (no channel works)! i eventually get disconnected!

Mixed wireless n/g @ 2.4ghz or 5ghz
Same as above (does not work for me)

Wireless g @ 2.4ghz
  1. If I set to autoscan channel, it works for a while but, eventually gets disconnected.
  2. Some channels work ! channel 11 @ 2.4ghz works for me stays connected!
( :) I remember reading somewhere if it works leave it alone! READ #3 )
  3. When set to channel 11 @ 2.4ghz I can only use minimal bandwidth or connections!
what do i mean by minimal bandwidth/connections.
Lets say Wifey is watching Apple TV (living room) and I'm using computer (in bedroom2)
downloading and browsing. I will eventually get disconnected!

   4. If I just use 1 device at a time, it will stay connected for days! :-\

I want to be able to use wireless n for streaming media thru apple TV. If not i guess ill settle for wireless g if it can stay connected!

As you can see by my signature. Bandwidth or internet speed is not a problem.(fast internet speed i think)
Signature also has router & modem models
As you can see by my past/previous post ! I have been struggling with this router for almost 2 weeks/maybe more! I think its time to return and try something else. unless someone has any suggestions ! If not I will be returning back today !  Thx

Ok, sounds like you've done quiet a bit of testing. I understand the frustration.
I'm curious here,
"NO bluetooth keyboards. (in case any1 ask/its a wireless connection )"
Is this in reference to a wireless keyboard you are using? If so, can you find out what frequency is runs on?

And to confirm, what is the current loaded FW on this unit? I thought you said you had v1.21 before. Is this still loaded by chance?

sry I dont have any wireless keyboards ! no bluetooth either !

I have the lastest firmware 1.23NA. I downloaded & uploaded just like you instructed. I reset it too.
I followed all your instructions step by step (past 2 weeks). Still no luck !

Ok man, sorry that we could not find a fix for this. I think we've tried everything for the most part. I'm going to recommend that you return for a refund and try another or something different. I really have enjoyed this unit and wish you could have had the same experience. I understand the frustration and wish this unit would have worked out. I hope you give another DLink unit a try. Let us know what you get. Hope it works out well.  :)

Good luck and also make sure the clerk knows what you've done and to ask him to send it back to DLink so they can review it and get it fixed. Hope the next router works well.  ;)
