Title: What is this mean? Left Hard Drive Has Failed, Volume_1 HDD degraded.
Post by: jeat on February 21, 2011, 10:20:07 PM
hi all,

I had purchase a 323 recently, inside there got 2 hard drive with 1TB. I use the second drive for RAID 1. I did receive an email saying that Left Hard Drive Has Failed, in another email alert says Volume_1 HDD degraded. What is this mean?

Thanks

It means exactly what it says - the left hard drive has failed and Volume_1 (which is your RAID1 volume) is degraded (not in an optimal condition, there is no redundancy).

The next step is to back up your data, and replace the failed hard drive with a new one.

In an ideal world, new equipment doesn't fail.  In the real world, it does, that's why manufacturers offer a warranty.  It is possible that the disk is fine, but the DNS-323 for some reason, can not communicate with it.

You can remove the disk and connect it to a PC and run the manufacturer's diagnostic to determine if it's working or not - if it is, you can then remove the partitions on it and return it to the NAS which will then see it as a new drive.

thanks fordem, my probs had resolve after running a diagnostic on the drive, the drive is not faulty but can't seen in the NAS, after i format the hard drive, its been found ok.

I have also had this issue with my setup. I have 2 1.5Tb drives running RAID 1 and if you get a power interruption, usually one of the drives shows up as failed. you have to pop out he drive and rebuild the array and its ok.

putting the NAS on a UPS obviously fixes this issue. I am not sure why it is so sensitive to power fluctuations, but mine certainly is...
