Title: DAP-1522 Antenna mods?
Post by: chahoua on January 15, 2009, 10:59:34 AM
Has anyone tried to mod their DAP-1522 with external antennas in hopes of a stronger signal?

I have two DAP-1522's and I plan on doing this mod.  I found a link to internal photos posted in this thread:

And after verifying that the internal antennas are connected with U.FL plug, I bought a couple of adapters on ebay:

Now I've just got to find some antennas.  I'll post pics when I'm done.

I think I'm gonna try this antenna.  What do you guys think?

Show pictures of how you mod'd (drilled holes in) the case to make the external antennas work.

I rec'd yesterday (sep 15) my DAP1522, and I've got a poor connection (14Mbps at 33% in Bridge-Mode).
Today I make 2 hole's on the back-side and glued 2 arial-plugs, and they must dry in several hours from now.

Before that, I did a second test (the antenna are in a bad posititon, because they were not fixed yet with glue),
but my singal strength was increasing already, now about 50% and the speed between 40-50Mbps.

Both test's are on the same location!

I wonder why D-Link didn't deliver the DAP1522 with ext. antenna's

I just got my DAP-1522 hooked up in bridge mode for my HTPC talking to my new DIR-825 to connect to my WHS.  I found these 7dBi Antenna Mod Kit for D-Link DAP-1522 Dual Band (http://cgi.ebay.com/7dBi-Antenna-Mod-Kit-D-Link-DAP-1522-Dual-Band-/350413016887?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51963e4f37) on eBay for $19.29 with $3.00 shipping.  They have the illustrations.  Not sure if this will help  so I would like to hear if anyone has done the mod.

Hey WizardKet - did you ever implement this mod?  Have any of you other guys ever done this?  I've been running the DAP-1522 for a few months to extend the range in my condo and while it's helped my iPad get better reception from the bedroom, the signal is still not quite strong enough to provide seamless, fast network access.  As I upgraded the antennas on my DIR-655 to an external higher gain model, I was going to just use those as external DAP-1522 antennas.  However, since I'm running the DAP-1522 in dual-band 5Ghz mode I want to ensure those DIR-655 antennas (which came off a 2.4Ghz-only device) will properly support my existing 5Ghz configuration.  I've been researching and from what I've read, 2.4Ghz antennas will not run 5Ghz radio signals.

Anyway, this eBay kit seems to be just what I need and I'm willing to pay $20 for it as long as I get confirmation that the original DIR-655 antennas I currently have today will not properly support my DAP-1522 in 5Ghz mode, and that this eBay kit should theoretically work great to provide my DAP-1522 for better dual-band wireless performance.

Thanks in advance!

It's been a while since these users were online. I recommend that you phone contact the Mfr of the Antenna product to get some official information. I know that doing that would not be supported on any DLink product however if thats something that you need, might be worth it if modified correctly.

Keep us posted on how it goes if you go with that modification.
