Title: DIR-655 Keeps Losing the Connection
Post by: morigeau on March 05, 2011, 01:19:43 AM
Hello,
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with a problem I've been having.  The problem is we keep losing the connection.  There are 4 of us using the router.  Sometimes wireless sometimes wired, but it makes no difference the wired connection is the same.

It seems to happen only when connected through our rooms or through wireless.  When I connect directly to the router I don't lose connection.  The router is downstairs and it routes the wired connection through a switch.  So when routing through the switch or using wireless the connection is lost and re-connects about every 30 seconds to 1 minute.  When directly connected it works fine.

I've reset the router and reset all settings twice and nothing.  I'm using 10/100.  Not sure if any of this matters. I have also updated the firmware to 1.35NA.  PPPOE password and username are correct as they have been given by our ISP.  Any settings I should be aware of?  Everything is pretty much default.  All I do is setup the internet connection and then setup a wireless connection.  Are we overloading the system maybe? I've also changed the password a few times as well.  Seems like the logs fill up really fast. Keep getting blocked UDP and TCP packets from different addresses.  It's late and I'm the only one using this computer just to type this.  I've cleared the logs and we get a lot of entries within seconds.   Let me know if anyone needs more info.  Thank you so much to whoever can help me.  ;D

What wireless modes are you using? Try changing from mixed to single mode G or mixed G and N. If your wireless devices are not using A B or N then you really don't need to broadcast these modes.

There could be some interference from other near by routers or cordless devices.
Any house cordless phones?

What wireless devices are being connected?
If your using PPPoE on the router, I presume your on DSL? I presume your DSL modem is bridge?
Make sure Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual if there not auto filled in.
Sometimes it's not the router however its the DSL modem disconnecting from the ISP for some reason. The routers logs will reflect this and might mention a PPPoE connection is down. Thats signafies the DSL modem lost connection, not the router. Check the logs for this.

Can try changing the Firewall settings from there default to EndPoint Independent for both TCP and UDP.

Also check out Advanced/wireless/WLan partiton, uncheck it and Short GI if they are checked.
Can turn off Protected WiFi. Maybe WISH too to test.

Let us know if any of this helps.

Furry,
I did everything you said except mess with the WISH setting and that seems to do the trick.  Thank you for all your help.

Respectfully,
David
