Title: Dlink DIR-655 router with Dlink DNS 323 nas
Post by: velocci on March 12, 2011, 07:45:29 PM
Hi all, I recently bought the Dlink DIR-655 router and I have a Dlink DNS 323 nas.  I have them connected and working.  When I send data from my PC to the DNS 323, i'm doing about 6MB/s.  when I'm sending data from DNS 323 to my PC, i'm doing about 30MB/s.   all 3 devices have the 1000 Mbps enabled and Jumbo frames is enabled on the DNS 323 and my PC.
is this normal?

The 655 doesn't handle Jumbo Frames well.  It has been advised in the past to NOT use Jumbo Frames.

I see.  which dlink router will give me the best wired transfer rates?

I am getting about 65mbs with my wndr3400 and 2 dlink dns-321's

i guess you mean 65 megabits per second?  you can't possibly mean 65 megabytes per second because that router isn't a gigabit router and the DNS 321 is not wireless.  so the most you can possibly have is 12.5 megabytes per second.

I would either contact both moderators on these forums and ask them which router they recommend if they can. You might pose this question over in the DNS 323 forum too. Let us know what you find out.

I've been reading some information on this:

correct, lower case b = bits.  I think that is what the OP meant too, doubtful he's getting 300 mbs.

Now, I am using a DLINK 24 port gigabit switch ahead of my router.  I previously used an 8 port Dlink gigabit switch, but ran out of ports.  I did find that putting a switch ahead of the router has improved overall performance of my network.  The DGS-1024Dis a little faster than the 2208.

So, MODEM > ROUTER > DLINK DGS-1024D > 321-1 AND 321-2

I don't see how putting a switch after your router would increase speeds.  have others done this with an increase in speed?

It's common practice to have a switch after the router on the LAN side. If your just transfering data between LAN side devices, the router doesn't need to be processing this information. Switches and hubs are made for this. Billys diagram is common and is recommended for house hold networks.

interesting.  i didn't know that.  how much are dlink switches?

It doesn't have to be a Dlink switch however swithes run from $30-$400. Just depends on the supported connected speeds and how many ports and other functions. I have an HP 24port Gb switch. That was about $300. I think I saw a NG 5 port for $40 the other day at Radio Shack.

does the router need a special port for this?  my router has the wan port for the modem and 4 normal ports for the devices.  would the switch get plugged into one of the 4 normal ports?

Yes, plug into one of the 4 LAN ports in back of the router.

how much of an increase in speed do you normally get by having it like this?

It depends on what your transferring, how well the network is set up and the condition of the cables, NICs, PC hardware such as drives and drive read and write speeds, the OS and software installed like Anti-Virus and Firewalls. Theoretically very fast as the data doesn't have to be processed by the router and it's only being relayed thru the switch between the 2 PCs.
Have you given this a try yet?

no I haven't.  but i will definitly do this since switches are not very expensive.  thanks alot for this tip!!
i'm going to have my cat5 lines changed to cat6 and then i'll probably buy the switch.

what is the best router and switch out there?  I would only want to spend upto $150 on the router and $50 on the switch.  the router must have DDNS, gigabit ports.

I paid about $120 for the 24 port switch, and about $40 for the 8 port switch.  I just watch for them to go on sale... they get discounted fairly heavily at times.

I've not found the perfect router... sigh... the best one I've come across for my needs is the wndr3400; but it has some issues, like the timezone feature doesn't work, so you have to schedule everything in Pacific time.  I have a Dlink dir-655 A3 which has a very nice feature set, but is not compatible with my 5GHz wireless adapters; although I haven't tried it with the latest .35 firmware.

As for switches, I've had good luck with the DLINK's.  I have some 5 port netgears that have worked good, but the DLINKs have been a better $$/port value

I prefer HP switches. Not saying DLink or others are bad. Just preference. I do enjoy my DGL-4500. My cousin is enjoying his DIR-655 though. Works great for his use. Finding routers just depend on what you need to do.

HP makes very good switches!

Hi all, would a laptop with a 5400RPM hardrive slow down transfer rates?  if so, roughly by how much (in terms of percentage).

also, if my network cables crossing electrical wires, would this slow down the speed?

Anything is possible, there are too many variables to factor in to get a good speed transfer rate. Things like adaptors for electrical connections, 3rd party SW running in the back ground or older HW can possible effect transfer speeds. The best thing is to minimize any thing between the PCs/Storage devices and the router. Wired connections is preferred if your looking for fast transfer speeds and use Gb networking.

This is the Upgrade to the D-Link Dir-655 Router. It doesn't have matching Desktop Adapters for it yet. It only works with Laptops, wirelessly at the moment.
