Post by: Florbid on March 13, 2011, 06:53:21 AM
Hi,

I keep having issues connecting to my nas.  as i rule i can see it and click on the mapped drive and go one level in, if i click on another folder it just times out.

other times it won't connect at all.

any ideas?

Just thing about this for a second - what sort of issues are you having?

Connectivity issues.

That's what you need to fix - the connection between your NAS and the host you're trying to connect to it from.  The chances of the problem being the NAS itself are so small that they are not worth discussing.

Now - since you have provided us with no details whatsoever about the connections (or network) between the two, you've really limited us to how much we can suggest ...

So - make sure your NAS and your computer are connected to your router using known good cables as a first step, if that doesn't fix it, let us know and we can work from there.

Hi Fordem,

thanks for the response.

I have the nas on firmware 1.09.  It connects to a netgear dgn2200

I haven't added any fun plugs etc, its a stock standard dlink 323.

I have tried a number of solutions on the cable.

If I connect the nas directly to my pc with a twisted cable, it works great.  It kind of defeats the object though as then its not on the network.

I did have it with a fixed IP address but have changed it to use the address allocated by the router.

I have also turned off the ftp and changed the network speed on the nas from auto to 100.

as it currently stands, i have the drive mapped, i can click on it and enter the password, no problem.

my drive is mapped to volume_1, typically this is fine, if i then click on one of the folders, it thinks about it for a while and then fails (i guess its a time out).  the exact error is "n:\media\music is not accessible.  The specified network name is no longer available"

I have a vista pc, my wife has a similar issue with a win 7 pc.

any ideas?

If it works when connected directly to your pc, then it is your infrastructure. The cable, the router or whatever else you are introducing into your environment.

My suggestion was connecting both the NAS and the PC to the router using known good cables, not connecting them directly to one another.

However, your "test" has proven the point - the problem IS your network - so you now need to determine what part of your network, so connect the NAS and the PC to the router with known good cables, and test again, and then work outwards from there.

My suspicion is that you are/were using wireless somewhere, and if you're not, then you probably have a defective cable.
