Title: Transfer speed *very* slow
Post by: hostile17 on March 21, 2011, 05:24:36 AM
Hi there,

I know there are various topics about speed issues, but they tend to talk about it being slow at 15MB/s etc.

Mine is very slow - we're talking about 129k/s transfer, then I get a network error.

I've updated to the 1.10 firmware, and I'm running a brand new WD20EARS disk (just one for now).

Any suggestions please? I can transfer to another computer that's also plugged into the router just fine.

Antony

This is a Network Attached Storage server, and your complaint is about transferring data across a network, obviously the network must play a part in this, yet you don't tell us about the network.

I can transfer to another computer that's also plugged into the router just fine.

What does this statement mean?

You can transfer from the NAS to another computer (let's call it computer#2) plugged into the router just fine, or you can transfer from computer#1 (which won't transfer to the NAS properly) to computer #2 just fine.

Ooh err, sorry. NAS is directly plugged into the router, and my PC is connected to a PowerLine Adpator, which the other end PowerLine Adaptor is connected directly to the router.

The latter. So computer 2 is connected directly to the router, like the NAS.

Okay I found something called "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled"

That means the NAS now works! It's 4.15MB/s generallly, so not great... but it is at least working.

Would appreciate it if someone more clever than me could tell me the ramifications of this and anyting else I can do to improve the speed so it's more usable.

1 - connect computer #1 directly to the router for test purposes.
2 - when #1 above shows that your powerline network is the culprit, get rid of your powerline network.

Powerline networks (and wireless networks) are very susceptible to interference - when I read your original post I was willing to bet there was a wireless network involved, not for one minute did I think powerline (which in my book is even worse.)

Yeah, connecting the computer direct was next step - back home so have been able to do that, rather than remote diagnosis.

10MB/s when connected directly, so it is the Powerline stuff.

I was confused at first because I can transfer to my other PC fine - not massively speedy, but fine - via them. So I thought I could rule them out. But for some reason NAS + Powerline = trouble.

At least the netsh thing has made it usable from my main PC, because without that it just wasn't playing ball.

Thanks.

Bleugh! Just when I think all is sorted...

Have the NAS connected directly with a cable to my PC - so nothing in between. Transfer of 12MB/s... then come back after a while, and it's reporting 6MB/S and is unresponsive. Can't even browse the NAS drive, Windows is just trying and getting nowhere.

Something is up... who knows where!

Okay one final question before I maybe send this back, because my patience is at an end!

Directly connected NAS to PC with cable. Didn't realise my PC supported 1 gig LAN, so tried it on auto and forced it to 1 gig duplex - and the NAS is set to auto. I get 12 MB/s.

Is that right or right for a 1 gig connection? I just don't want unrealistic expecations.

Thanks

I consider that marginal for gigabit - this on a high speed NAS, the best you'll ever see will probably be around 20~25MB/sec.
