Title: Another random disconnect thread...
Post by: RudeMood12 on January 17, 2009, 05:54:12 PM
hey guys!

i hate to drop more hate on this topic, but I too am a new owner of a DIR-655 after it came HIGHLY recommended from some co-workers of mine.  However, I am having the dreaded 'random disconnect' issue as well.

The two devices I am seeing problems with are my iMac (Aluminum model) and my iPhone.  When I set up the router the first night, I didn't seem to have any issues.  Then, after the first day or so, I noticed that I was getting the requested deauthentication issue.  First with my iMac, now with my iPhone.

My network was initially setup as WPA2 only, AES cipher, 20/40Mhz, Auto channel.   After reading some threads in here, I took the additional steps that were listed, such as turning off the 'Extra Wireless Protection' mode and tried a specific channel.  That seems to have worked for my iMac (so far) but now my iPhone will randomly disconnect.  I would post a log, but it seems very similar to the other troubles that users are having.

I work for a certain company that drives around in VW beetles everyday, so I am quite familiar with their setup and operation and my iMac has never given my connection issues before, even with different (crappier) routers.

The only other thing I can think of was that I DID upgrade the firmware over my wireless connection (had no other option) but its usual operation is fine and does not lead me to believe there may be an issue with it.

I did just buy the router so I do have the option of swapping it out.  Is that worth a shot?

Here are my current settings for reference -

Mode - Mixed n and g
Wireless Channel 3
Transmission Rate - Auto
Channel Width - Auto
WPA2/AES Cipher
SSID Visible
WPS turned off
Extra wireless protection disabled
Beacon period 80

Upgrading firmware wirelessly is an absolute no-no. To make sure the process went OK (some remains of old code may still be there) start by flashing to 1.11 or 1.21 WIRED. Otherwise we can not rule out a bad flash.

There's a chance...could be another settings issue though.

Some other questions:
Why did you set beacon period to 80 (default is 100)?
Have you tried different channels?
Have you tried manually overwriting the transmission Rate to a somewhat lower rate?
Have you tried setting DHCP to Always broadcast (http://192.168.0.1/Basic/Network.shtml)?

the re-write of the 1.21 firmware seems to have done the trick.  almost 2 days later and all is well.  will keep an eye on it to see what happens though.  i am happy again :)
