Title: Wireless N devices connecting as Wireless G
Post by: AuntieParticle on March 31, 2011, 03:38:42 AM
I just installed my new DIR-655 yesterday and it went pretty smoothly. However, only my Notebook PC is connecting as 802.11n. All my other devices that are N capable are connection at 802.11g. These devices are XBox 360 Elite with wireless N adapter, 2 wireless N Roku Players, and Lexmark X6570 Printer. Is there some way to get the router to see these devices as N capable short of forcing everything to connect as 802.11n? I thought this would just be automatic. I am most interested in getting the Rokus to connect as N, the other two are not so important.

Try changing the WiFi mode to single mode G to test with out security to see if any of these devices connect correctly. Yes they should connect automatically.

Then set for Single mode N and try again with out security. Once you test, and get connect, then try setting Security to WPA or WPA2 and a PW.

Also, make sure you are using AES and not TKIP.

Thanks for the replies. I got as far as testing N only without security. The two Rokus connected that way but the XBox did not. Also I have an iPod Touch 2nd generation that did not connect to N without security. At that point I didn't bother testing the printer.

So, I went ahead and put it back the way it was before. With G & N and WAP security. Again it is working but everything except the Notebook PC is connection as G. If I could get the two Rokus to connect as N while in N & G mode I'd be very happy.

Hi AuntieParticle,

The Lexmark X6570 is only capable of connecting at b or g speeds.

Print Server
    Ethernet 802.11b/g Lexmark N2050

You would need to upgrade your Printer, to a Wireless Printer that is capable of printing at N speeds.

Thanks, when I did a quick search of the wireless capabilities of the Lexmark X6570 printer before my original post, since it's not addressed in any of the documentation I have for the printer, I found a review that listed it as being b/g/n/ capable. I guess I should have chosen my source more carefully.  :-[

Anyway, this is one more reason why I need to use a combination mode for my devices. I hope some way can be found to have the router detect my N devices as N - and not just G.

It's possible that the devices connecting to the router are automatically choosing to use the G over N connection due to the signal being better on G.  :-\
