Title: dir 655 router and hp network
Post by: panda349 on April 10, 2011, 10:37:19 AM
I recently purchased an all in one hp computer and it came with an all in one wirless printer.  when i set up the computer i noticed that it has an hp network which is wireless so the computer has an adapter in it for wireless.  anyway when i went to network and sharing center in control panel  i saw that the hp network has no internet access.  do i have to set up the hp network in the network settings on the router setup page.  Also on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen is a computer icon i clicked on it and it shows that my internet is connected and has internet access but the network isnt connected and has no internet access  i click on the network and it theres a connect button i click on that it gets info then it asks for network security key which i dont have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I cant set up my wireless printer until i get the network problem solved.

If your 655 is set up on wireless, then you need to go to the printer and set up the printers wireless to connect to the 655 routers wireless network.

If you don't have the 655 wireless setup, you need to log into the router and go to Setup/Wireless settings and set the WiFi mode to single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have any N devices. Give a SSID name of the wireless network, can be anything you want. Set the security to WPA or WPA2. Cipher type set to Auto. Enter in a Password that you only know and will remember. Once this is set up, then go the printer and follow it's instructions to connect to the routers wireless network, use the SSID and the PW you gave in the router. Call up HP if you need additional help with the printer if you need.

The HP Network is just a name.  If you are trying to connect to your 655 you want to connect to SSID name that you created on the 655.  If you have other systems connected to the router, you connect this one the same way.  If you are going to connect wirelessly, you want to go to Manage Wireless Networks, find your Router and connect to that.  If your Router is NOT broadcasting it's SSID then set the wireless connection up manually.

Like I said in all the PMs, did you make an actual connection to the router's SSID?

Panda, is there any friends, neighbors or someone who knows computers and networks pretty good around your area that can come over and help with this? Where are you located at?

I really recommend having someone who has background knowledge to help you out to get this set up. I wish I could just hop over in do it in person. LOL. Are there any computer services that do house calls?

You need someone in person to come in and work to get this going for you. I feel that we are not getting enough information here on the forums or there is a mis-communication here to help you get your system going and set up.

If that's what you are seeing on the status page then you are not getting Internet Connection from your ISP.

yep, that will do it..
Need to verify that your ISP modem is on passing information to the router.
Is the LAN cable between the ISP modem and router in good condition and is it connected to the WAN port on the back of the router?
Can you get some one to help you out there in person?

also im not taking this  new computer out of my house  im paying for it in installments and i just started paying for it   Im thinking I might have to try calling Dlink again.  Or it could be my isp's  problem cause they dont have wireless internet even though i am connected to AOL wirelessly right now but i dont have network access through the internet and my network doesnt have internet access or network access.

What is the make and model # of the ISP modem? We need to see if we can find out more about this modem.
Have you considered going with a different ISP?

Understand that.
I presume that the router you have looks like on one listed here?
http://support.rapidsys.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=8&nav=0 (http://support.rapidsys.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=8&nav=0)

From what I can tell its a DSL modem. I presume that when your on the internet like now that your directly connected to the modem?

When you hook up the 655 router it should be like this:
DSL modem out from WAN port to WAN Port>655. THen your PC connected to the LAN port on the 655.
Make sure the cable going from the DSL modem is good. Try a different one when connected to the 655 router.

Theoretically the DSL modem should connect to the 655. You might have to set up the 655 routers Setup/Internet/Manual setting from DHCP to PPPoE.

The ISP should be able to help you with this information.

Just concerned that maybe there is a configuration issue here between the DSL modem and the 655 router. There router is reporting a connection however is not getting anything when it should. Seems like the handshake between the modem and router isn't happening.

I believe this DSL modem has a built in router as well so if you can get the DSL modem into BRIDGE mode or Transparent mode, then you might beable to get the 655 working. Again, you'll need to set up the 655 router for PPPoE and input the user account information.

I would def call up the ISP and see if this can be done.

i changed the router from dhcp to pppoe and still got the same results. AOL did not give me a user name or password  i had to think of a user name and password myself thats how i sign onto AOL.  Again AOL does not have wireless internet.  i called AOL about my network problem and i said that i was connected to AOL wirelessly but my network has no internet access.  they said if im connected to AOL then theres no problem. I have another computer connected to the router with a cable and i have a network connected wirelessly.  They both say the same thing this  computer does  in internet  no network access and in network  no internet access and no network access.

It has to be AOL.  I mean on the network map it shows my computer the router and the internet and from my computer to the router is a broken line and from the router to the internet is a solid line with an x in the middle of it.

And on the toolbar of the computer where the wireless symbol is is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it.

I try to troubleshoot the problem and the computer cant identify the problem.  This is a brand new computer it shouldnt have any problems with it.

Oh I forgot I have a wireless printer connected to the router wirelessly too but I am having problems trying to access web services on the printer.  I get a message saying server connection error.  I am thinking its cause the printer isnt connected to my network. and of course my network doesnt have internet access.

This new computer has a 802.11n Wireless LAN card #2 in it and a friend of mine was saying the problem is with the card  he said its defective.  I said that i can connect to my network so it cant be the card.  In device manager on the computer it says the card is working properly.  my friend said just cause it says that doesnt mean that the card is working properly.

I am thinking about changing to a different isp.  But if i do that I dont think i will need this router.  I'm thinking I wasted alot of money buying this router cause to me its acting like a second modem cause i have another computer connected to it and a wireless netboook connected wirelessly to it too.  I havent  had this router very long either.

Like I said earlier when I first got the router I was having problems with setup so I called Dlink and spoke to someone who didnt speak English very well and he told me how to configure the router.  I was on the phone all day with him that day.  I was setting it up to the other computer cause I didnt have this new one at that time.  I was changing alot of things in the settings like he told me to do and I think the router was never configured right in the first place but still I think AOL service has alot to do with the problem.
Or should I say AOHELL.

If I do go with another isp and the problem with the network goes away cause I'm not using the Dlink dir 655 router.  I will post on the forum with the news.

I think that AOL might have a special way of servicing internet to users and they might not support the additional router on there DSL modem. I would investigate a different ISP and go from there. I recommend trying Cable first if its in your area, if not, a different DSL provider. If you can get cable ISP, I recommend the motorola SB6120 if the ISP supports it. It will connect up great to the 655 router.
