Title: Raid 0 to Raid 1
Post by: bajlewis on April 13, 2011, 01:18:33 PM
I recently set up my DNS-321 in a Raid 0 configuration with 2 - 2TB hard drives - Now on my computer I see two 2TB Volumes.  I have begun to fill one up with quite a bit of information, but there is still plenty of room left.

Is there any way I can switch the configuration to RAID1 without reformatting and erasing the hard drive I've already begun to use?  I'd like the two to mirror each other in case of failure, but I don't have enough storage anywhere else to back up the initial volume that I began to fill.

I'm not extremely tech savvy so any help would be appreciated!  Thanks.

From my understanding you cannot convert between RAID types.  Changing RAID types will reformat your HDDs.

Another important point (which you kind of raise) is that you have no backup.  If you're data is important to you, you should look at formatting both drives in Standard mode and performing scheduled backups from one drive to the second.

I did this about a year ago.  It reformatted both drives, so definitely have a backup.

That's one lesson you absolutely don't want to learn the hard way.
