I have dir-655 rev B with latest firmware and having some wireless drops with DNS problem, 2 wireless laptops would loose wireless connection and when I do troubleshooting it says dns server can't be reached, both laptops still get excellent signal and i can log into the router, but just cant get to the internet. Does anybody ales have this problem?

Try making sure that Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual
Turn off Advanced DNS Services.
Enable DNS relay under Setup/Networking.
-
yep thats all enabled by default
-
Try flushing DNS or repairing the network connection on the PC?

I had the same issue. A few days ago, I changed the default DNS servers in the routers config for openDNS DNS server addresses. The issue has not come back. It was happening 3 to 5 times a day on the old and latest version B firmware. I hope like hell this fixed it as it has been perfect since. I work from my home office so it was a real PITA.

Could you post the step you took to make these changes on the router?
I changed the default DNS servers in the routers config for openDNS DNS server addresses.
-
Rex are you having the same problem?
-
Yes
-
I would also chech to see if Advanced DNS Service is enabled. Disable it.
Enable DNS relay and make sure primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
-
Did the router throw you an error page or did it just stop resolving domain names?
-
nope no errors

Fuzzynutz...seems like the same issues with the wired. Are you RoadRunner users?
-
yeah i have roadrunner

If your on cable, can you verify that the cable line is in good condition and there are no or maybe only one splitter on the line? The more splitters on the cable line, the less signal the modem gets and can effect connectivity and thus effects everything else down the line. Preferred is to not have any splitters on the line.
It's a long shot however can you try a different cable modem. I had good luck with Linksys cable modems. Sometimes ISP only rent out low end modems and sometimes are the best.

So far it seems that everyone that is having problems with Wireless and Wired disconnects is using the DIR-655 and has Road Runner as their internet provider.
I am having a TWC (RR) tech coming out Tuesday May 3 to look into the issue. Also the tech is bringing a different modem (presenting using Motorola SB5101).

I think it may be something with the B versions, I have been running an A2 with Roadrunner since 2007 and haven't had a hiccup. I am wondering if its something to do with the B versions supporting IPv6 and RR not using 6.
-
From what I recall, my IPv6 is turned off but perhaps it being turned off is not really off. Thanks Dave for the input. I will put that on my list of questions for the tech. And perhaps FuzzyNutz can provide more insight of this specific issue.

It's possible that the IPv6 on the router if it's enabled is possibly causing an issue. I presume that the ISP and ISP modem are not supporting IPv6 protocol yet?
I have seen some issues with Windows Vista and 7, being that IPv6 is enabled by default causing some minor issues. I usually disable them unless there is a need for it. There has been some issues with Advanced DNS services as well. Why I recommend not using it and using ISP DNS IP addresses along with DNS Relay. Less processing by the router if we can help it. Just use the features of the router that you really need kinda thing.
Also does this happen with one specific browser or others? Opera, FF, Flock?
It would be interesting to see if a different cable modem does the same thing. Need to narrow down and weed out the causes if possible. Can the ISP identify any logs from there side and see if there is an issue. I just had to call my ISP as we were down for a bit. Was there issue I guess. So they can tell you if there is any issues, down time info and errors seen, if you can get a good tech on the phone.

I believe the IPv6 is enabled on the computer itself so I will check that out and check it on the router again too.
The drops happen on any browser: Yahoo, Google and Google Chrome.
I had the IP monitor the modem for a week that they did not see any issues. As I see more and more posts, the issue seems to be the capability between RoadRunner and the Router. The exact issue has yet to be determined. I will play with more settings especially the IPv6.
Thanks
Bocko

Google Chrome is a actual browser, Google and yahoo are services your probably seeing while using Chrome. Try an actual browser, like IE, Opera, FF or Flock. Do they exhibit the same issue as you see on Chrome?
-
I have the problem when I use IE, then I switch to Google Chrome and it happens there. Then I check my email and that is affected too. I haven't tried Opera, FF or Flock.
-
Ok, making sure. Let us know how it goes.
Again, check DNS addressing. Use ISP addressing to test.
Turn off Advanced DNS Service. Enable DNS Relay.

I am not having the DNS issue just the router locking up after heavy traffic. I am on Roadrunner with a Cisco 2203C Cable modem.
The Belkin router was not failing before and has not since I gave up on the DIR-655 rev b 2.00 router and put the Belkin back in..
My son is on the same roadrunner network as me and has A older Dir-655 with Firmware 1.34 and his is not failing..
just info. I hope it is useful..
