Title: Seagate 2TB Drive Supported?
Post by: Conehead on April 24, 2011, 07:58:27 AM: Hi, I was wondering if anyone has tried the following drive in the DNS-323:

Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA 6GB/S 3.5IN 12MS 5900RPM 64MB Hard Drive (ST2000DL003)

It is a 4K ATF drive that, depending on which day of the week it is on the threads, sometimes works, possibly doesn't, or maybe never has been supported. The most popular 4K drive that pops up for discussion is the WD20EARS, but I haven't seen any mention of the drive above.

I know there's the link of supported drives found here: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=672.0 but it's almost a year outdated.

"Seagate SmartAlign technology allows you to get all the benefits of the new Advanced Format 4K sector standard without any hassle–no utilities, no extra steps."

So, according to them, they should work, on their own.

"Drives that have been tested and approved by D-Link will be flagged with an asterisk (*). Drive models that do NOT have an asterisk (*) by them are currently being used by end users but have not been internally tested or verified by D-Link."

Although the drive will "probably" work, I'm still a bit wary about using new drive models without proper testing (and D'Link sign-off). Just because the drive seems to function on day-1, doesn't mean the drive will continue to behave properly after a month or so of continued use and data-loading.

Post by: dosborne on April 26, 2011, 09:00:28 AM: It is also important to note that some drives may work in some configurations, but not others. The example is the WD AFT drives which work as single drives, but not as Raid, if I've read the notices correctly. IMO, if a drive cannot be used for all functions, then it should not be considered as "working".
