question re: DIR-655; Hardware ver A4; Firmware version 1.32NA
during bandwidth tests to several sites (principally speedtest.net) I get ping times of 10-11 ms, download speeds of 12+ to 17+ mbps but failure on upload tests using my DIR-655.
when I bypass the 655 and test directly with my cable modem, all (including upload) tests work reliably and consistantly.
I have swapped the two ethernet cables involved as well as replacing both with new cables but the results are the same (uploads fail with 655 and work without it)
I have seen several postings over the the last year with this same problem but have never seen any comment from D-Link, or a solution from any reader.
Not that it should have any bearing, but I have TA785GE-128M motherboard and am running Windows 7 (patch current) on COMCAST
is this problem acknowledged by D-Link and is there a solution?

Turn off QoS and any traffic shaping options in router.
Ensure Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses are being filled in.
Turn off Advanced DNS Service.
Turn ON DNS relay.
What browser are you using? Happen with different browsers?
-
QoS unchecked in Windows; Packet Shaping unchecked in router; Qos gray in router; primary and secondary dns populated (different addresses); advanced DNS disabled in router;
newest (within 1 week) versions of Firefox, Chrome and Explorer - all produce the same result;
so far only change made is QoS / shaping
no change in results...
have not yet located DNS relay setting
-
Enable DNS Relay: is (and was) checked in the router
All suggestions verified or changed to your recommendations FurryNutz (thanks for your suggestions)- but still have failure on all three (current) major browsers.
-
Are there any Anti Virus or 3rd party firewall programs installed on 7?
How are you connecting to the router? I presume wired?
-
as indicated in the comments re swapping and replacing the ethernet cables - I am wired.
I am using KIS 2011 during the failed PC <-> DIR 655 <-> Cable Router tests and during the successful
PC <-> Cable Router
-
Any chance you can take this router to a neighbors or friends house and see if the issue is tracking?
-
Since I did not have this problem with my previous Netgear wireless router (sold when I decided to "upgrade" to gigabit and 802.11N) I think I'll just go pickup a new Netgear box and test it. If no problem, sell/ditch the D-Link - if problem remains rtn the Netgear and swap cable router (free) - if problem still remains focus on PC settings.
May be time to fire up WireShark and work on my tcp/udp/ip/icmp skills.
Thanks for your help

Kewl, let us know what you find out. Be interested in wireshark results. ::)

Interesting twist - after last nights post, I tested again and the upload test worked fine. Ran a total of 11 tests to different parts of the country and got 11 successes.
This morning 5 tests - five failures. no router or modem resets or PC reboots between this mornings failed tests, yesterdays successes and Wednesdays failures. - only difference in yesterdays successes and todays failures is time-of-day, 6.5 hours (position in the universe etc)
May look up a a command line bandwidth tool and schedule some TOD testing and log results.

Nice find. Seems like you are seeing success. I'm thinkin ISP related here? ::)
-
I'm leaning to the intermittence being attributable to whatever can make (and is likely making) dynamic changes - both ISP and Win 7 TCP stack are candidates...
Since Win7 performs well (99-100%) when connected directly to the cable modem, the overall problem is likely that dynamic changes made by either ISP or Win7 is in conflict with the current DIR-655 settings. It is possible that once identified, the problem can be resolved by configuration changes to either PC or router ( any favorable changes to (from) Comcast are unlikely ).
Another thing - in (less rigorously) researching this problem in the past several months, I do not recall any XP or Linux users with this problem - only Win 7 users.
I ran across the below informative link this morning which discusses several of the Win 7 parameters.

Good info. Keep us posted on how it goes and if you find anything.

I too am having consistent failures with the upload speed test. I am running WinXP SP3 but I have a Rev B 655 with 2.00NA firmware. Like you I can bypass the router and pass the test with flying colors. So, I would have to say it's a setting within the router. Hopefully someone on this forum knows what that setting is and will let us know or help us figure it out.

How is your router set up Trek?
What is your ISP service?
What is your ISP modem? Cable or DSL?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?
What wireless modes are you using?
Are you using QoS?
Are you using Advanced DNS Service?
Are you using DNS relay?
-
FurryNutz:
ISP: Comcast Cable
Modem: Arris (standalone modem, no integrated router)
Connection: wired
QoS: unchecked
Packet Shaping: unchecked
Advanced DNS: unchecked
DNS relay: checked
Firewall: endpoint independent for UDP and TCP
Static IP adresseses set
I hope that this is enough information for you to help. Any help given would be most appreciated.
Thank you.
-
When you say static IP addresses, are you referring that you have manually set up addressing on the devices or on the router for the devices?
What OS is loaded on the PC that your using when checking speed tests?
Also is any other devices on line when checking speeds? It's best to only check with one device online over a wired connection.
Have seen some issues with Arris modems and these routers. Any chance of testing a different modem? Any chance of taking your router to a neighbors or friends house with Internet and see if this issue tracks with the router?
-
I have set static IP addresses in the router for the devices. I am running WinXP SP3 with all the updates. I am not able to test with a different modem but I have bypassed the router and have run the speedtest.net test successfully. I also hooked up my old router, a POS Belkin G, and ran the test with no problem. So, I feel confident with saying that it's the router or an issue with the router/arris modem combo. Perhaps a firewall setting that is not allowing outbound connections? But I send/receive email with no problems. I don't know, just throwing ideas out there. I also have a post on here about slow connections to secure sites, any chance the two are related? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

How about turning off SPI? see any differences?
Is uPnP enabled?
Factory reset and test with one PC with out configuring the router, then test with turning off QoS stuff mentioned in previous post.
It's possible that this router is having issue. If you tried a different router with same modem and don't exhibit this issue something is going on with this router. :-\
And you have the latest FW?
-
I turned off SPI and saw no difference. Same error same issues. uPnP is enabled. Reset router to factory settings and tried, same error same issues. Set everything back up, QoS and all that, same error same issues. As for the firmware, when I check within the router it says that I have the newest firmware, 2.00NA. But when I go on D-link.com I found this:
Firmware 2.01NA 2/03/2011
Revision Info:
¤ Added ALG.
¤ Supports IPv6 Spec 1.12R.
Do you think I should upgrade? It seems to me that the difference would be minimal, but, if you think that I should then I will. Thanks for your help.
-
Ya, seems like you've done the basics. I would update to v2.01NA and test again. I recommend the following:
Factory reset.
Upload the .bin FW file.
Factory reset once more.
Test.
Let us know how it goes.

FurryNutz:
3 times did what you instructed and 3 times failure. It won't take the firmware upgrade. I click the upgrade, it asks me twice if I am sure, I click ok, says it will take about a minute. Wait 4-5 minutes, twice it came up "internet explorer cannot display this page" with an address that had upgrade_firmware.cgi in it. I clicked refresh both times and got the same message about cannot display page. Then I couldn't log back in the router until I reset it. But it still says that the firmware is 2.00NA. :( What did I do wrong? Any suggestions?
-
What browser are you using to do this?
Try a different browser, Opera, FF or Flock. I use Opera.
And you are unzipping the file and extracting the .bin file right? Just making sure here.
And you are wired to the router and not wireless right?
If the router wont take the update then it's possible this router needs to be RMA'd.
Let us know.
-
I was using IE, but to make sure I downloaded and installed Opera and tried to upgrade the firmware with that browser. Same result. I understand you are just making sure, but yes, I unzipped the file and extracted the .bin file. And I am wired to the router, not wireless. I am hopeful that you have another suggestion as I am fresh out of ideas. Thanks for all your help.
-
Ya running out of ideas here too.
One last one:
http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2009/03/11/the-30-30-30-hard-reset-rule-for-routers.htm (http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2009/03/11/the-30-30-30-hard-reset-rule-for-routers.htm)
Not sure if this will work on these routers or not. Gave give it a try. If you can't seem to get this to work or the FW file to load, I would get the router to DLink for RMA. FW should update and it's failing too. This is a problem on this router.
-
Just a note, doesn't Factory Reset revert everything, including the firmware? So, doing a reset, installing new firmware, then resetting again will be effectively the same as just resetting to factory defaults once?
-
If it works on this router, It should wipe the old firmware and go into a firmware loader mode. From the screen after a 30/30/30 reset, all you can do is upload firmware to the router, no passwords or pretty screen, just a “browse” file button and a “upload” file button and some basic warnings and instructions. No Internet access, so you need to already have the firmware on your machine before doing the 30/30/30 reset.
Again it may not work on this router. Someone on the 825 forum said it worked on that router.
-
Well, I am at a loss for words. I did the 30-30-30 reset and I thought it broke my router, LOL. For the longest time the power light was orange and would not turn blue. Then it did and I was able to access the router setup. The first thing I did was try to update the firmware with Opera and I got the same results as the last time I tried, timeout. Reset, try to update with IE, same thing. Reset, set up router so that I could connect to the internet and tried speedtest.net without altering any of the default settings. It actually ran the upload test without error. But it would only do it that one time, on a side note I got the fastest download speed ever running that test. But I am left with the same basic problem now, error on the speedtest.net upload test, extremely slow connections to secure sites, and cannot update the firmware. Is it time to RMA this router? Or should I just return it to place of purchase and get another one? Any advice, comments, and suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
P.S. It never did go into the "firmware loader mode" when I reset it using 30-30-30.
-
Ok, so we know that the 30 method doesn't work, was worth a shot.
Yes I would return the unit to POP if you can first off if thats your best option.
If not then I would RMA it. If it won't take a FW UP date then thats a problem that needs to be addressed with DLink. Let us know how it goes. Sorry we couldn't get it going for ya. :-[
-
No problem, I do appreciate the time and effort you put in to help me try to resolve this issue. Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you. Well, it got me this time. I will return it to the place of purchase, as I only had it for a week or so, and get another one. Hopefully a new one will take care of all my issues. Thanks again for all your help and time. It is sincerely very much appreciated.

some additional troubleshooting feedback
went to comcast and got a replacement modem (newer than previous) Motorola SB5101U - no change in testing results
Attached (ethernet) a different PC running XP to the 655 and had no problems (download and upload worked consistently 10 of 10 tests).
Attached another differnet PC running Win 7 to the 655 and had no problems (download and upload worked consistently 10 of 10 tests).
Installed XP on the PC for which I started this thread (the TA785GE motherboard running Win 7) and experienced the same failures as with Win 7
Incidentally, I have also tested all four Ethernet ports on the 655, so it is not a port specific problem.
So to summarize:
Three PC's have been tested two work acceptably (98+% for both upload and download) both with and without the DIR-655
1 PC (TA785GE motherboard running either Win7 or XP) works acceptably for upload and download without the DIR-655 but fails consistently on uploads using the 655 (and works consistently for downloads).
This appears to be an incompatibly problem between the TA785GE motherboard Ethernet port/drivers/settings and the DIR-655 settings.
I have also tested (toggled various driver settings) on the motherboard and many in the DIR-655 configuration (extensively but not exhaustively) with no change in results.
I configured the problem machine to be in the DMZ on the 655, believing this would circumvent any possible firewall or filtering problems, but the problem lives on.
As much as I tried to avoid it, it looks like I have boxed myself in to the WireShark analysis
More later

FurryNutz:
Exchanged router for a brand new one and am having the same issues, slow response to secure websites and can't update the firmware. Must be an issue with this RevB/2.00NA. I have tried all the troubleshooting I did with the previous router to the same result. Any further suggestions? ???

Hmmm 2 routers doing the same thing. I sent you a PM.
