Title: can I set 655 as just an access point or bridge???
Post by: dlgentle on May 08, 2011, 04:39:28 PM
I like the ease and price of the 655 as well as the range and speed.  I was wondering if you can use them as a bridge to connect another building or just add a second as an access point???  Let me know if anyone has tried this.  It does not seem straightforward from the control panel.

thanks,

Don

Setting > Network Setting

Once there you need to view the page without a style to see the "WAN Port Mode" option.

In IE just select View > style > no style from the menu bar.

can anyone tell me how to configure  a Dir-655_RevB as an AP or bridging  ?

I am putting together a system for a customer that I would need two devices, we ran one cat 5 e to a  second floor closet for a wireless router and we are installing a network cabinet in the basement.  In the basement the rest of the data wires are going to be connected to a switch (along with the wireless router) and then into a router with a firewall.
Would it make sense to use two dir-655's to increase the wireless range (it is a very large home)?
If so what settings would need to be adjusted top ensure correct operation with optimal performance?

Thank you. :-\

I would check out adding a wireless extender or relay unit to a router to extend the range of the one router:

If you haven't bought anything yet, its best NOT to have two or more routers connected together unless you want to run segmented networks.  If you want to extend range buy an access point to go with the router.

If I purchase a new router in the future and want to just use my DIR-655 A2 as a repeater can I just put it in bridge mode?  What I'm trying to do is have one router cover my main floor and upstairs which works fine, but the basement receives poor signal strength and would like to put something down there so the signal is stronger for those devices and then relay/repeat it back to the main router.  Can I do this w/the DIR-655 A2 if I put it in the basement and put it in bridge mode?  No Ethernet cables would be attached to it, only the power cord.  Please let me know if this is feasible or not.  Thanks!

the only mode these routers can do is AP mode. You can use the same SSID as the host Wifi however just ensure the channels being used differ between them. I use the 655 as my host router and use a DGL-4500, DIR-825 and Airport Extreme as APs. 2 are 5Ghz only APs and the Airport Extreme shares the same SSID wifi coming from the 655.

@FurryNutz

So are you saying if I have a home network e.g. CaptainM, WPA protected etc with my Thomson Router downstairs. I can plug in my Dir-655 upstairs, input the CaptainM SSID in the DIR-655 settings and it will act as a wireless access point?

In the same way an airport express would work to "Join a network" ?

Review the Turning a Router into an AP over on the DGL-4500 forum for the info, however yes, you can use the 655 on the same network, ssid, just use different channels and dont connect it using the WAN port, use the LAN port in back.

Sorry, my bad i was looking for something different.

I have a Thomson cable router in my house downstairs. I thought it might be possible to have my 655 connect to my existing network wirelessly from upstairs. Not as an extender. Just to connect to the wireless network. I could then connect my PC/Nas/media player to its LAN Ports.

Thanks for he reply though

Ya the 655 can't act as a repeater, just as an AP.

I have a DIR-651 set up to act as a network switch (DNS Relay enabled, DHCP disabled).  With wireless enabled it gives me a second wireless AP too.

All that works great except I'm also trying to get the Guest Zone wireless AP to work as well.  Want to keep my guests isolated from my home network...   Any wireless devices that connect to the Guest AP don't have access to the internet.  That path is not making it back to my main router and modem.

Any ideas on how to make the Guest Zone work?

I presume GZ might not work in AP mode as I think that option is directly tied to the WAN port for access. And if you use the 651 in AP mode your not using the WAN port any more. Only the LAN port in which the main WiFi zone is tied to the LAN and WAN side. The GZ feature separates it from the LAN side however still gives internet to the WAN side.

GZ == WAN port only...

That definitely seem to be the case.  Thanks for the confirmation.

So to use the DIR-655 as an AP only, it must be wired via a CAT5/5e connection back to the "other" router device?  I have three floors on which I need coverage.  Currently my DIR-655 is on the main floor and my cable modem is next to it (in the entertainment center since the TV and BR player have wired connections for internet).  My upstairs coverage is fine, but the basement is weak.  What can I put down there to act as a repeater so I can have a solid signal down there too?  I was thinking if I got a newer router than I would just use the DIR-655 to do that, but it seems like you are saying that is not possible.  Given that fact, rather than replacing the DIR-655 as my primary router, if I leave it in place as is, what can I put in the basement that will not require a wired connection (other than power of course)?  Thanks.

Yes you can use the 655 as an AP wired including CAT 6 which is preferred. However you have a couple of open options available as well. Get a DAP model device that support repeating function or use the power line LAN devices that connect thru the v110 power lines and get Internet to where its needed. I do prefer the AP as it can provide the best stability for wireless since it has a wired connection. However that kind of depends on cable runs and how you can manage to get a wire installed with out too much hassle. Sometimes running a wired outside the building and back in can work. If this isn't a viable option then of course, using a repeating devices or the power line devices will work as an alternative.

Right now I have my PC in an office in the basement and eventually when we finish redoing the basement, a new TV and my son's XBox360 will alos be down there.  My PC has a wired Gig/E port and I also have a DWA-160 wireless adapter.  I think installing a repeater is my best option so I don't have to purchase multiple power line adapterss.  I had considered that for my PC but when talk of moving the XBox came up I started thinking extending the wireless signal was my better option overall.

Be aware that a wired connection is best for the xbox if you can do that.

I have two old US Robotic routers (USR5461). I have one attached to my cable modem, and that router is  wirelessly connected to my second router. As they are in separate buildings, I cannot use a cable between them. Today I bought two DIR-655s intending to do the same thing except at a much higher speed, etc. From what I read here, it appears that they will only work togeather if linked by cable. HOW CAN THIS BE???? The USR's are old and they can connect wirelessly with each other. This is just unbelievable. Someone please tell me that my conclusions are wrong.

The DIR series of routers are just that, ROUTERS not wifi repeaters or bridged. DIR series routers do not support repeating or bridged modes. They can't be turned into APs however that requires a wired connection to the back. If you need a repeater or bridge function then you need DAP-1360 or 1522 model units for this.

I'm new to this, so please be gentle. After reading this thread and the FAQ (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0), do I understand correctly that I can get a D-Link DIR-505, set it up to access wirelessly my main router upstairs connected to a cable/DSL modem, then plug my DIR-655 into the DIR-505 with an Ethernet cable (so that my downstairs devices will run off the DIR-655)?

If so, does the DIR-655 have to connect wired to the DIR-505 (not a problem; just curious), or is it also able to connect wirelessly?

The 655 would need to be wired and you would need to configure the 655 using this:

Anybody know a work around to use Guest Zone in AP - Access Point mode? That is to say, Have Internet access only without access to LAN (Enable Routing Between Zones box UNCHECKED) . Can I do this buy attaching another AP device?

Guest Zone would not be used as it's dependent upon the WAN port being used. If the 655 is running in AP mode wired to another main host router using the LAN port only, then Guest Zone needs to be disabled.
