Title: [1.06] No sleep for the HDDs
Post by: icewater on January 20, 2009, 04:40:13 AM
I've upgraded from 1.05 to 1.06.
It appears that my 2 x 1TB WD HDDs will not sleep now.
It is constantly on and spinning.
It makes the box rather warm to touch.

I downgraded back to 1.05 and everything is fine again. (it goes back to sleep over the pre-determined time)
I believe this problem might be mentioned in another forum.
However, I cannot find any solutions to it. (maybe it will be fixed in 1.07)

I do like the ps3 media streaming and ssl ftp (if anyone knows the port ranges to forward) functions in 1.06.

Has anyone also experienced this problem??

No. This seems to work great right now.

There are similar reports from other users having the same problem with 1.06.

Also suffering from this problem. I have searched for a solution and had led me to this site.

Any updates from the dlink support team?

Try resetting the unit to factory defaults if this has not been done since updating to 1.06. Are you using the iTunes server or UPnP AV media server function with any device currently?

OK will try this out. To answer some of your questions, yes iTunes is enabled and no, the UPnP AV media is disabled.

I use the iTunes to stream music to my Roku soundbridge which I use on a daily basis

I have everything turned off and reset my settings after I installed 1.06.

It simply does not work. Nothing shuts off and the fans seem to take forever to come on. I've personally mentioned it a few times and well still nothing. I was hoping that 1.07 would address it, but instead I"m stuck with 1.05 that does appear to work and the lack of raid rebuilding that 1.06 does offer.

Looking at 1.08 it appears that this problem is still not going to be addressed which is sad. I really want to get really loud and maybe get heard, but at this point I'm sure its not going to get addressed because since several of us have complained nothing has been done.

I have the same problem, too.

I disabled UPnP, iTunes, e-mail alerts, DHCP cient, almost everything. I have also done a reset to factory default settings but nothing changed. The problem is still there.

D-Link, please give a solution to this very frustrating problem.

I have tried your suggestion, but it did not work.

Here is what I've done so far:

took out the old drive (RHS)
inserted new drive
reinstalled 1.06 FW
reset to factory default
reformated the new drive
FTP, UPnP, iTunes, LLTD all are disabled
No files on the new drive (not even FFP, transmission etc.....)
Synced time to pool.ntp.org
configured power management to 10 minutes

the disk still spins well after 10 minutes

Do they spin down if all PCs are turned off?

No, they don't in my case.
All PCs and WiFi turned off, but the HDDs do not spin down.

But after downgraded back to 1.05, they spin down as normal.
It appears to be firmware related.

Icewater,

what lights are lighted, dimmed, flickering after the prescribed time has elapsed on your power management?

In my test, I have unpluged the ethernet cable and after a few minutes of stand by the box woke up again.

I have tried different "sleep" times in the power management with no effects.
I have also tried unplugging the lan cable and they will still not sleep.
The "power" button is lighted and I can hear the hdd spinning. (forever... I have even left it overnight)
I can't remember exactly what other lights are flickering etc.. as I've been back to firmware 1.05 for awhile now.

This is a major issue for me.  Ever since upgrading to 1.06 my DNS-323 is on with the drives spinning most all of the time.  When I'm in the basement using the computer right next to it, I hear it spin up every now and then  even though no one is accessing it.  A major reason I bought the 323 is to save money.  Having it spin up like this for no reason defeats the savings.  I assumed this would be fixed in 1.08.  D-Link, are you really ignoring this problem???

I've three DNS 323s, bought at different times, identical disks, firmware and settings in each.  One refused to go to sleep, the others were ok.  Last night, updated to 1.07, no change.  Tried various other things as recommended on the thread, no luck.  The NAS was set to sleep at 10 minutes.  Changed the setting to 15 minutes and it worked!!!  Don't know why, but maybe it'll  help someone.

Tried it again with a new NAS, don't ask why, but it worked again, no problem with sleeping!

I looked at my email settings, email alerts also off.

Clearly there is something wrong with the firmware, shouldn't be too hard for them to fix.

Im still running 1.05 because there still isn't a fix. Shame.

I wanted to buy to more bigger drives and build another box, but I'm not sure now thats a good option.

as far as the LEDs are concerned, does the main on/off switch LED dim down or does the HDD LED light turn off when the disk drives go to sleep?

The big square "logo" button will go dark or dim

hey thanks again fordem.   ;D

as i've mentioned on my other reply to you, now that i have the NAS i'm pretty much answering my own questiions.

i've read somewhere here that the drives don't go to sleep unless it's set for 15 minutes (1.7 FW).  well i guess that's true since i've tried the 5 and 10 minute intervals and the drives would not hibernate until i switched to 15 minutes.  no big deal i suppose, as long as they stay asleep until accessed again.
