Title: Random Network Drives disconnection
Post by: marconap on January 22, 2009, 08:36:00 AM
Hi all, I own a DNS-323 with two 500GB RAID1 Western digital drives, running 1.05 firmware.
The DNS is network mapped. Sometimes I do copy of a large quantity of folders & files, using drag and drop on my Win XP SP3 notebook. In some cases I experienced spontaneous disconnection of the networked directories. The same problem appears if I try to use the DNS as location for p2p temporay files.
I tried to connect the DNS directly to the PC with a crossover cable, I set the network card to 100Mb Half duplex, but the problem remains.
The ftp and the admin web interface seem not to be involved in the problem, they continue to work correctly, even if I send or get a very large file via ftp.
D-link support suggested me to upgrade the firmware to 1.06 but I feel that this is not the right way.

Thanks
Marco

I suggest going with D-Link Engineering's recommendation.  The firmware update addresses many issues of which one of them may be related to what you are experiencing.

Cheers,

I successfully upgraded the firmware version to 1.06, but my problems still exist. >:(

Try setting your DNS323 with a static IP.

Without knowing your network topography that might be hard to troubleshoot.  Are all your clients losing connection or just one?  You know when mapping a drive you have to tell it to reconnect automatically on resume/restart right? (otherwise it needs to be done manually)

Marco - how large were the files you're transferring?  > 4GB ?

The length of the files does not excedd 4 GB. After a few days, I think that the problem still remain but it is quite different. The NAS now does not disconnects but some programs report errors if the temporary or output files are located on the NAS.
Before upgrading the firmware, I experienced the problem even if connect the NAS to the PC directly with a cross cable. Now I have to perform the same test with 1.06 fw.
I'll keep you informed.
Thanks very much

I am having the same problem, I bought this DNS-323 for a christmas present to myself.  I have a single seagate 1tb drive model ST31000333AS.  I am running it as a static IP, have everything turned off except FTP. It is currently set to 100mbit.  I have tried it through both a cisco 24 port baystack and a linksys wrt54g(running dd-wrt).

I use it to stream media to my popcorn hour(A100), and a couple different pc's, running both windows xp and vista.  I am running firmware 1.06. I have similar problems trying to copy files to it, both big and small.

I have tried firmware 1.05 also, has the same problem.  I can watch a video for a random amount of time between 5-30 minutes, on my pc the mapped drive disappears when the video stops.

Try updating your NIC drivers. If you are using Jumbo frames on you network try it disabled also you may want to try eliminating the switch and see if there is a difference.

I have just updated my NIC driver, turned OFF every servers, updated the firmware to 1.06, enabled LLTD support (Win XP sp3), set a static address and now the problem does not appear ONLY if I connect the DNS-323 and the notebook with a crosover cable. :-X
I will try more tests (with a different switch I hope)...
Thanks

Can you just try it without a switch to see if you have a problem there? or is the issue only when using a switch?
