Title: transferring files between directories
Post by: das75 on June 02, 2011, 07:19:35 AM
maybe more a Windows XP question but...

Have the 323 (as JBOD) and desktop each connected to a switch. When I move files from one directory to another using Windows Explorer appears they written across the network from the 323>desktop>323, though both directories are on the DNS-323.

Anyway around this?

Can you give an example of a copy that does that on your device. Are you accessing two different shares and copying across from two different Windows Explorers? I have seen this before but normally its because of the way the device is being accessed to copy/move folders.

Mine is the same way.

If I use explorer to copy from one JBOD drive to another, the files are routed through my desktop.

A method for directly transferring would be great, as you would obviously save time.

Before I opened up 2 windows on the PC desktop, \\Dlink-2b1fa4\bt\DL via PC and \\Dlink-2b1fa4\Volume_1\movies and more\series . Dragging the file between windows would get another pop-up, Copying... . Files would just copy but take time

Think I see what you are getting. What I just did was create another directory \\Dlink-2b1fa4\Volume_1\movies and more\new downloads. Again I opened up 2 windows this time \\Dlink-2b1fa4\Volume_1\movies and more\series and \\Dlink-2b1fa4\Volume_1\movies and more\new downloads and when I drag the file across, move (not copy now) is instant.

Thanks

If you system recognises that the file locations are on the same share, it should initiate a "move". If not, a "copy" is performed and that requires the file to be copied from the original location to your PC, then from your PC to the destination.

Yeah, should always just move if you're on the same drive, my issue is between drives, ie: Volume_1 and Volume_2.

Should be able to transfer between drives at a significantly higher transfer speed if you can avoid the network.

Suggestions?
