Greetings,
I have been using my DIR-655 for about 2 weeks now with Road Runner wideband services. Starting yesterday my internet became very slow and I discovered the cause was the router. I tried resetting it to factory settings and things will be fine and run smoothly for about 5-15 minutes but after that it goes back to being extremely slow. My speed tests would go from 10ms (normal) to 250-450ms. Before this issue occurred the Dlink was perfect, had full speeds. I am running a wire Ethernet connection.
I am currently using revB and tried upgrading firmware to 2.01NA which had no effect, but make my internet seemingly go back to normal for the first few minutes then nosedive again.
I have also changed my speed/duplex settings in Network Config to 1gbs Full Duplex. I've also disabled QoS, and still no change. Not sure what else to do.
When directly connected to the modem everything seems fine. The modem is also the provided Motorola SBG6580 which I have called Time Warner to set the modem into bridge mode and have the DIR-655 connected to it.

Any suggestions?

Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled.
Ensure DNS addresses are filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.
Setup Reserved (static) IP addresses for your devices on the router.
Setup Firewall for Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Let us know.

What should I put for the secondary DNS ip?
Would you know of any reason why the router would be working perfectly for 2 weeks on the settings I had it at which was pretty much plug and play and now it's giving me so much grief?

Look under Status/Device Info/Wan section for DNS that you should be seeing from the ISP modem. Use those addresses seen there.

Another problem that started the same time my lag issues did is my modem would disconnect for about 20 seconds after 15-20minutes and reconnect after that. This didn't seem to happen when I was directly connected to the modem that I noticed anyway.
And putting the DNS server IP does not seem to have fixed my problem. I still get a high latency and low (higher than before) download/upload.

Had the same problem as you. I had to change router - from a Buffalo router to dlink dir655, but I still have other problems with it (wireless is dropping out on the router). But the speed works as expected.
Try borrowing another router and do a test.

if its dns you could also use the google public DNSes
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
also there are 2 other recent posts with simular issues of throttled internet using 655.
1 is mine and i thought i resolved mine but some other stuff has happened that leads me to believe its an ISP issue but mediacom has not been answereing thier phones in 3 days now. :(

I would check the ISP lines comming to the house, I.e, dsl phone or Cable lines and make sure they are in good working condition, i.e. filtered correctly or no cable tv line splitters on the line. Splitters will reduce line signal. Make sure Phone lines are in working order for DSL and filtered correctly.
swap out LAN cables between ISP modem and router. Upgrade to CAT6 if you can. There cheap now. I use a 1footer between mine. Let us know.

I switched from the included blue ethernet cable to a thicker yellow ethernet cable I got years ago from Verizon DSL and things have seemed to return back to normal. I also left my modem and router turned off overnight if that had anything to do with it. Thanks!

Speeds seem back to normal, haven't disconnected so far that I've noticed and my speeds are back to normal (average 5.8mbps download from Steam). Will post back if anything changes in the morning

After changing the ethernet cable and leaving my router/modem off for a night things seem to have gone back to normal, I'm guessing it was the provided ethernet cable that was throttling my internet. Thanks for the help!
