Title: Frequent disconnects, but only when multiple users / platforms are online
Post by: DubYa on June 16, 2011, 12:44:04 PM
Hello all!

I'm at my end with this issue. As I'm not nearly the network IT guy the rest of you are, I figured this would be a great place to ask for help.

My issue: frequently dropped internet connection. I'm using the DIR-655 router, H/w Ver.:B1. F/W Ver.:2.00NA.
Now, I'm assuming the first thing i'll be told is to update FW version, which I will do when I leave work and make it home. But I should point out a couple things that I have not seen in any related posts, and I'll make it as short as possible.

I have 2 roommates, who each have XBox 360's they game with online. So 1 hardline from the router goes to my PC, 1 goes to each of their Xbox's, and the other remaining hardline goes to the 'office' computer. They each have handheld devices that connect wirelessly (nintendo 3DS, Ipad, Laptop, 2 smart phones).

The problem almost NEVER arises when it's just me online gaming. But it seems as if every time more than 1 machine / platform is connecting we drop our connection, which can only get back up and running with a power cycle.

Edit: We have comcast cable internet service.

Any additional input would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Dub

I would review the DGL-4500 forum XBL stick for setting up some QoS rules. The UI is different however the data can be used for other routers here.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP modem do you have? Built in router or stand alone?
Set up Reserved (Static) IP addresses for your devices ON the router.
Ensure devices are set up for auto obtain addressing.
I would disable advanced DNS Services.
Enable DNS Relay.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Thanks for the reply FurryNutz

I'll just run down that list of things to try / change when I get home. Unfortunately I had GF obligations yesterday and was unable to make it home.

We use Comcast (cable internet) and have a stand alone cable modem.
I'm not 100% sure on how to set up static IP addresses, but I can usually find a 'how to' on anything on the interwebs. I'm assuming most of that is set up in the router UI..
