Title: DIR-655 stops broadcasting WIFI signal
Post by: liyufx on June 20, 2011, 08:21:51 PM
Hi,

I bought a DIR-655 (F/W v. 2.00NA) about 6 months ago. It worked well until a couple of weeks ago. Then it started to stop broadcasting WIFI signal without apparent reason. When it did so, I could still connect to it and internet with wired connection, but the WIFI scan does not show my SSID. If I reboot it (either through the admin interface, or just disconnect and reconnect the power), I would be able to reconnect to WIFI, but then WIFI will stop working again in about 8-10 hours. I am rebooting this thing 2-3 times a days and it is very frustrating. Curiously, I borrowed a N300 router to try out, and am experiencing exactly the same problem? So what is it? Some sort of DLink feature across the board? How do I fix it?

Thanks in advance,

Yu

What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

What wireless modes are you running? Try Mixed G and N? Single G or N?
What FW version is currently loaded?
Any cordless phones in the house?
Any other Wifi in the area?
If yoru seeing this using a different router, I presume there are some external interferences going on.
Might need to change channels as well.

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

Thanks for the response.

It was mixed G and N. I switched to G only, and so far so good, WIFI is still working 24 hours after. I will see if that can last.

2.00

Yes and yes, should not be a surprise, right. If it is just that the router was disconnecting my devices, I'd say the interference is more likely the problem. But it just stopped broadcasting WIFI signals outright. The interference theory does not seem to explain it.

Frankly I dont' see how those changes could help. Again it is not that the router was disconnecting my devices. It just stopped broadcasting WIFI signals.

Thanks again, will keep you posted.

Kewl, let us know.

I would do this for testing. Turn off ALL wifi/cordless devives that you can find around the house. Test with only one device that you need on the WiFi. Set up for Mixed G and N again and see if you notice the WiFi dropping again. Graduate turning on the devices until you might notice the WiFi drop on the router. Might help find a culprit.

Disable the Upnp in advanced networking.  That worked for me.  I had a conflict that two computers were using the same ip address.  If that works it should be OK to re-enable upnp if the conflict is fixed automatically.

Thanks, I will try disable upnp. I changed the setting to use G and B only (no N) and it worked for 3 days without issue. Just when I thought that I found a workaround it happened again today :( If it happens once every 3 days I can probably live with it, but I don't have much faith in this thing ATM.

Are you using devices that need B mode wifi?
What happens if you use just Single mode G only?
Where you able to test with only one Wifi device to see if it exhibited the same problems.
Just curious if other external interferences are causing the WiFi problem you seeing.
Might need to change channels as well. Start with 1 and work your way up.

Well, tried G only first and got disconnected a few hours in. That was why I switched to G and B for a change. It is kind of impractical to do the single device test that you suggested, especially for several days. I have a lot of devices, 4 computers (2 are now using wired connection only with WIFI turned off), a internet TV box and a iPhone. In the evening is when most of the devices are connected. But the WIFI does not always go away on high time. Sometimes it goes away during midnight when there was only one device connected. In any case, I am trying the disabling upnp right now, so far so good. As I said if I got to a point where it can go a few days in row, I can live with it. If it does not work I will try the change channels as well. Do I need to configure my devices to match the router channel change as well?

You don't have to configure anything on the devices if you change channels. They follow the signal automatically. Keep us posted on your testing.

You can consider this resolved. With B and G and UPNP disabled, I have managed to get 1 week without WIFI disruption.

So what WiFi mode are you now using? Glad you got it working.
