Title: DIR-655 Hardware Ver A1 FW Ver 1.02 Admin Password Fails
Post by: jmdr4 on January 24, 2009, 03:25:04 PM
I had both the Admin and User passwords changed and I wrote my passwords down. Neither are working. My network is fully functional and the DIR-655 functions well for my wireless and wired needs and I don't want to lose all my settings as I have TIVO setup on wireless. Is it possible to find the Admin Password some how without using the reset switch? Any help appreciated. I have tried all case combinations of my password which was not a dictionary word. Thanks.

Turn on the caps you might have hit that when you type the passwords in. Try different combinations. But you have to realize the sole purpose it to keep unwanted guest out of the router. I take it you didn't backup your configuration as the sound of it.  Next time do screen dumps of your configuration and save them to a folder or jumpdrive USB with your password info and store that in a secret place. Now if you still can't get into the router you could do a full reset and yes you don't want to do that but that might be the only way to go for now...

Reflashing the firmware will set all parameters in the router to default. Do not restore from a backup config file because you will also restore the forgotten password  ;D But since you cannot enter the router this will be a problem.

Look in the manual on how to perform a factory default reset, this wil also erase all settings and passwords.

I ran into an issue on my old WBR2310 when attempting to use a password that ended with a "$". The password change appeared to have been persisted but the password would not work. Turned out the password was still the old password (null in the case of factory default). This behaviour was on a different model but I've seen special chars in passwords cause issues across different technologies. Just a shot in the dark here.

Thanks. I did have special characters within the string, but neither first or last. I guess I'm resigning myself to resetting and restarting.

Other option is to see where you might have made the error. CAPS Lock, first letter capital, a mistyped character, a forgotten character ect
