Title: Laptop will not stay connected via WiFi
Post by: Dixie on June 21, 2011, 10:37:58 PM
Hi --

I installed the DIR-655 on my home network a couple weeks ago to replace an older model D-Link that failed.

I'm having trouble with my laptop maintaining a connection to the network ever since.

Details:
Firmware Version :     2.00NA , Wed, 12, May, 2010
Hardware Version: B1

Desktop WinXP hardwired to router
Blu-Ray player hardwired to router
Dish Network received hardwired to router
Laptop Win7 wifi
Android phone wifi
CenturyLink DSL

It seems that the wifi stays up until I try to access the internet via the laptop. After a few seconds, the laptop will disconnect, and many times the router seems to reset itself, though not always. This does not happen when using a hard-wired connection. Using the wifi-enabled Android phone doesn't seem to affect the network.

Sometimes the wifi comes back up pretty quickly, but other times it does not. Earlier today, the internet globe light on the router turned from blue to amber. I had to reset the CenturyLink DSL modem for it to work again.

When the network goes does, I get a message on my desktop that a network cable is unplugged, and the network disappears from my available wifi networks that I can see with the laptop. Sometimes I get the "limited connectivity" message.

I have tried changing the 802.11 mode around, and I've changed from Auto Channel Scan to Channel 1. Neither of those have fixed the problem.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks.

Are there many accespoints near your home? Like Sitecom?

Then that is your problem. Sitecom sent out by high power and doesn't care for other wifi routers.

Also,
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
If it's a built in router, it's preferred to bridge the DSL modem.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.

Any cordless house phones?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

I don't think so.

If it's a built in router, it's preferred to bridge the DSL modem.

Embarq 660 modem -- CenturyLink (formerly Embarq) support says it's plug-n-play and doesn't require bridging.

And my laptop network card is
Dell Wireless 1510 Wireless-N WLAN Mini-Card

Right now it is set to mixed, but I did change to other modes when troubleshooting a couple days ago, and that didn't seem to fix anything. But I can try again and make sure to go through every option.

Security mode is WPA-Personal and WPA mode is Auto.

Any cordless house phones?
Yes, two different ones.

Both primary & secondary DNS show 0.0.0.0

Quote
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
It is off.

Quote
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
It is enabled.

Quote
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
DHCP server is enabled.

Quote
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
I'm 99% sure they are.

Quote
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
I'm not familiar with these. I use Windows Firewall and I didn't see any settings like that, but I'm probably not looking in the right place.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
OK

Quote
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
OK.

Two new issues:

Getting DNS Lookup Failed when trying to access some pages. Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

Also getting
Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.
This is happening with YouTube, but I can access the site if I use an incognito window in Chrome.
It is also happening with the DLink forums, but I cannot access via incognito window.
**This error is happening on both the wired and wireless connections, but access did come back up on the wired connection.

The TCP and UDP endpoint can be found on the firewall setting of your router under ADVANCED TAB... :)

It sounds simple enough, but Windows Firewall seems to complicate that process.
Under Advanced Settings, I can change inbound rules, outbound rules, connection security rules.
Are these the steps I need to follow? >> http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/open-a-port-in-windows-7s-firewall/

Disable the Upnp in advanced networking.  That worked for me.  I had a conflict that two computers were using the same ip address.  If that works it should be OK to re-enable upnp if the conflict is fixed automatically.

Thanks. I will try that. i'm traveling for the next few days, but will change the setting next time I connect to the home wifi.

Haven't had any troubles while traveling and using public wifi, so I'm sure the issue is with my router setup at home.
