Title: One laptop will not connect??
Post by: Mits on January 25, 2009, 12:52:06 PM
Hi, I set up two of my laptops and two blackberries on my DIR-655 using b/g/n and WPA/WPA2-Personal security.  I have had no problems setting up any of the other computers I could easily connect to them and enter in the PSK.

On this last computer when I attempt to connect to the wireless connection it gives me the following message: "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network.  The network may no longer be in range.  Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again"

I searched this in google, but unfortunately the Microsoft solution to fixing this I can't quite figure out.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884787
   1. Click Start, point to Connect To, click Show all connections, and then double-click your wireless network adapter.
   2. On the General tab, click Properties.
   3. Click the Wireless Networks tab, and then click Add.
   4. Type the service set identifier (SSID) of the access point.
   5. Set Network Authentication to Shared.
   6. Click to clear the following check box:
The key is provided for me automatically
   7. Type the WEP key for the wireless network access point in the Network key box.
   8. Type the WEP key in the Confirm network key box, and then click OK.

I cannot for my life figure out where the "Add" button is!  I am in Wireless Network Connection Properties then I click "Properties" but there is no "Add" button!  Any help?

Note - Its a "Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card"

Edit - I updated my drivers, and I can now put in a WEP key for the wireless, but now the connection shows no bars...any ideas?

Edit - I now am showing 5 bars of signal strength, but it now idles on "Waiting for the network" and then eventually stops and just stays on the page...

Seems like you use Windows... any hint as to version, Service packs installed etc? Looks like a missing SP2 or 3.

Sorry, SP3 is installed on Microsoft Windows XP Home.  It can now see the signal and sees it at full strength but it now idles at "Waiting for Network"...i'm starting to think it's not the router but should I try to upgrade the firmware?

What 's the firmware version on the router now? I think Windows is acting up.
Have you tried resetting the connection?

Ehhh, if you have WPA2 security, why do you call it the WEP key? Is the security method entered correctly in Windows?

Firmware 1.11 Hardware A3
Sorry, I just substituted WEP for WPA2 key.  Its entered in correctly, but now I am looking at the settings for one of the computers connected wirelessly to it and it has:
SSID is correct
"Connect even if this network is not broadcasting" is checked
Network Authentication: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption is set to AES on the one connected, but on the one that wont that option isnt even there, i'm tihnking that this is the problem (only option is TKIP)
Network key is correct and everything else is correct....any ideas?

I have Auto (WPA & WPA2) as WPA mode, and  TKIP and AES as the cipher type...so I think that should be working?

You do need AES. But if it is not there...Windows XP SP2 already supports WPA, but using WPA2 requires installing the XP WPA2 patch. If you've installed the XP patch (or SP3) but don't see that choice, you're missing WPA2 card drivers. So check with the wifi card manufacturerfirst  for the most recent driver.

Yeah, but I understand that i'm using WPA/WPA2 and I updated the wireless card in the laptop to the latest ones, and it recognizes that it is a WPA2 encrypted device.  Theoretically can't I use WPA on this one and WPA2 on all the others if it doesn't have AES?  I think i'm going to attempt to connect to it with no security at all, and if that doesn't work I know its not the security settings.

I turned off my security settings completely (unsecured wireless network) and it still will not connect...any ideas?

It is still pausing on "Waiting for the network" with all the settings correct.

Hi Mits,

Are you using Network Magic or a similar type program?

Is the Network Filter on?

Check firewall settings

With firewall off it still will not connect (windows firewall)

I have Network Magic installed on the wired PC that I used to setup the wireless, what is the "network filter"?

I'm starting to think that the DIR-655 isn't compatible with the Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card, the latest drivers are from 2003 that I could find.  It will connect to other wireless signals, but not the DIR-655's....frustrating!  I really cant think of anything else.  I'm going to upgrade the firmware to 1.21 on the router and hope for the best.  I'm out of ideas, unless anyone else has anything I think it's just time to get a PC card for the old girl.  Or does anyone know of a cheap wireless mini-PCI card that forsure will work with the DIR-655?

Best thing to do is start from scratch.

1. uninstall the wireless driver from the laptop
2. reboot the laptop
3. the OS should prompt you for the driver  just let it scan for it
4. type in your passcode
5. it should connect

You can also bind the order for which network card should be use first on the laptop. Also the system should use Microsoft Client first. That's only if you still have issues.
