Title: DGL-4500 Crashing and rebooting router
Post by: cvillarrd on June 30, 2011, 07:08:44 PM
I am having problems with my DGL-4500, I see there are numerous but not sure if I am missing a fix.

Thinks work fine for a bit, 15 minutes to a half hour, and then while watching netflix XBL disconnects. I check and the router has restarted. After messing with it, I leave it alone, XBL off. 2 hours go by it seems to be running, started to download the crysis 2 high res pacck 1.5 gig download, crashes the router again and it restarts. I am on time warner cable.

Any ideas?

Also noted:

HW: A2
FW 1.23NA

Disabled most everything suggested in the other threads. I find the most problems with downloading  larges files and the random restarts using hulu plus and netflix over XBL.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? Use ISP DNS here.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?

For xbox gaming, follow the sticky for XBL in this forum.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Thanks! Answers inline. I also reset to factory again and then upgraded (by downloading) to 1.23NA again.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Time Warner Cable (Road runner)
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Stand Alone

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? Use ISP DNS here. Done already
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option. Setup as of now.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Done already.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup as of now.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. Done already
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. Done already.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N? Mixed G and B as of right now. I am using a PS3 as well and I heard you need B for that. I am considering moving my router and hardwiring my xbox and ps3.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. WPA only given some feedback on other posts.
What wireless devices do you have connected? Two laptops, an iPad, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Any cordless house phones? Nope.

For xbox gaming, follow the sticky for XBL in this forum.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. Will do the previous two and test.

Try single mode G or mixed G and N? Mixed G and B as of right now. I am using a PS3 as well and I heard you need B for that. I am considering moving my router and hardwiring my xbox and ps3. PS3 doesn't use B so I recommend using G or Mixed G and N if you have any devices supporting N, if not then single G mode is preferred.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. WPA only given some feedback on other posts. WPA2 and AES has the best performance.
What wireless devices do you have connected? Two laptops, an iPad, PS3, and Xbox 360.
Any cordless house phones? Nope.

I am setting up the Xbox one as we speak. I will also update based on your suggestions just above.

I let it run over night, router never restarted for 9 hours. Went and did a speed test and it immediately crashed and rebooted. I ran this test over my laptop via wireless, no xbox turned on at all.

If any thing do a factory reset of the router and set it up again from scratch.
I would also make sure the cable between the Router and modem is Cat6 or Cat5e minimum and in working order.
Turn off WiFi while tesing.
Turn off Wish.
Turn off Protected WiFi.
Ensure uPnP is enabled.

Are there any logs entries when the router rebooting?
When doing FW updates, do the following,
Factory reset, update FW, factory reset onces more.

I'm running 1.21NA from the factory.

Let us know.

Trying all these now. I was seeing Deauthentication Received before... now I dont see anything, it wipes out the log when rebooting or something

Deauthentication Received are from cell phones and from what I gather, just means the phone went to sleep, was shut off or went out of range from the router.

How is the xbox connected? Wired or wireless. If wireless, set wifi mode to Single mode G at 2.4Ghz to test.
Set up a reserved IP address on the router for the xbox, wired or wireless.
Run thru the gaming and game fuel sticky to set up a rule.

Also do you have wireless security enabled? Maybe random people are connecting. Based on what you said, it restarts when you do something that requires heavy bandwidth, could be the Lan controller is not working probably defective unit. I am sure FurryNutz will help you out :)

Second level said that it was defective, so I waited for the new router and today I finally got it. It was not brand new, probably refurbished. The  logs says wireless start failed and under wireless radio it says init failed. After talking to support AGAIN they want to RMA this one again.

How is the router set up?
What WiFi modes are you using? Single G and Mixed G and N?
Can you go to the store that has a return policy and get a new one to test out?

Keep us posted on what happens.

Nope I am out of the return for newegg... :-\

I FINALLY reached a nice lady in RMA and she said it should have been brand new in the RMA box and it was not. They are trying to get it sorted out, but this will probably be the last router I buy from dlink. I just dont want to throw my hands up when I so  much money invested.

And I know it is the router, I borrowed a linksys from my friend and it worked perfectly fine. although xbox live does disconnect once in a while.

Before you trash it try this.  There is a 3rd party firmware that will allow you to drop your firmware to less than 1.21 but first you must drop your current fw to 1.21.  Then go to ispgeeks and get the downgrade file and reflash your router to 1.15.  Once you're up on the 1.15 you can flash it to 1.16b3 which was the best fw that I used.  I ran it on the a2 d-link sent me to replace the a1 that was hosed by the 1.21na fw.  I'm gonna dig that old a1 out of the box once I find it and downgrade the fw on it since my a2 died this week.  Once I reflash it I'm gonna keep it in reserve.  Just dropped some cash on a netgear wndr4500 to replace the a2.  I have both files if you need them and if you do just pm me.

On your 4500?

On your 4500?

Yeah.  My older 4500 loved 1.23NA but this one doesn't.  I flashed back to 1.21 and then Puff sent me 1.16B3 which I flashed to and am currently on.

So far, so good, connection is stable and speeds are fantastic and clean.  My issues normally took about a week to surface so I'm going to monitor it for a week and see.
