Title: DIR-655 Wireless connection drop-outs
Post by: RePeteSki on July 03, 2011, 12:29:05 PM
I have a DIR-655 (Hrdw vA2, FW v1.35NA) with ANT24-0700 (Hrdw vA2, v1.2) and the following devices attached:

Hard wired:
1. Windows 7 64-Bit professional
2. Windows Home Server

Wireless:
1. Windows 7 64-Bit Home using DWA-160 adapter (Hrdw vB1, FW v2.00)
2. Windows 7 64-Bit Home using DWA-160 adapter (Hrdw vA1, FW v1.10)
3. Windows XP 32-Bit Home using DWA-160 adapter (Hrdw vA1, FW v1.10)
4. Plus various iPods, DVD Players, and phones

All computers have latest updates and patches both hardware and software.  Security is set to WPA2.

Everything has connected wirelessly for two years without a problem.  Six weeks ago, Wireless computer #1 started having connection lost and /or time-out errors when backing up to the Home Server.  Back-up never gets past 33 percent.  Four weeks ago, Wireless computer #2 started having connection lost and /or time-out errors when backing up to the Home Server.  Back-up never gets past 43 percent.  So far, Wireless computer #3 is still currently not experiencing this problem.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted all back-ups, and reset-up the connector software on all computers.  I have exhausted all software issues with the home server and computers.

I have even tried running back-ups with only the server and only one computer connected.  I have even tried turning QoS on and off.

The errors all point to the router causing the drop/time outs.  Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?  Is there a way to prioritize the data transfer to the server ahead of streaming?  Is the any different settings I should be trying.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

What wireless modes are you running? Mixed? Single?
Try setting to Single mode G to test and see if it exhibits the same. Try mixed G and N then.

Any cordless phones in the house?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

FurryNutz, Thanks for your response.  The following is the information you requested:

Comcast Cable.
Arris TM602G. Does not have a built-in router.

Yes.  AT&T E5947B 5.8 Ghz
Yes.  Four neighbors.  Their signal strengths are 18%, 14%, 8%, and 6%.  All are on different channels.

Static IP addresses are set up for the server and computers only.
My router does not have the window at Setup/Internet/Manual.  However, the server and computers do show up under the DCHP section in the Status tab.
Already disabled.
Already enabled.

I have been trying the various wireless modes.  Taking longer than I thought it would.  I will follow up this post with the results when completed.

You should have a Setup/Internet/Manual settings section on the router.

I've had my DIR-655 for a couple of years and through that time I've had periods where my wi-fi connections will randomly drop, and numbers of months where the connection has been stable.  I'm in one of those periods where it drops, and it does so often, every 5 minutes or so.  When it drops off, it's no longer broadcasting because I can no longer see it in my list of available networks.

I'll try to include all pertinent information, but let me know if I've missed anything.

What ISP service do you have? Cable, but I've experienced drops with both.

What ISP modem do you have? Arris Touchstone Telephony Modem TM602G/115.  When I ran off DSL, I had the same issues with my DSL modem.

What wireless modes are you running? Mixed 802.11 n and g
Any cordless phones in the house?  Yes, a decent distance away though
Any other WiFi routers in the area? No

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices. Done
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual. Done
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option. Done
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled. Done

Also I have UPNP disabled.  Haven't disabled QoS yet.  I'm hoping that's not the issue, I really don't want to disable it.

Load doesn't seem to matter.  Cabled connection work fine during periods of disconnect, though once in a while they will drop.

Not revision B router and running firmware 1.35NA.  I've experinced the same drop issues with previous firmware versions.

I'm running a varitey of devices: Windows 7 laptop, Iphone, Android, Windows Vista desktop.  While typing this on my laptop, I've lost connection 4 or 5 times.  fun fun! :)

I think that's it, but let me know if you have any further questions!

Also I've done a few channels, 11, 1, 6, etc, but still experience drops.

I too am having the same problems as described above (although I have Rev. B router). It started a couple of weeks ago. I have to turn the wireless off and then back on in order for devices to connect to it. Connections will last for a day and then its back to the same where it cannot connect to the wireless. I am starting to wonder if storm damage may have caused this to occur.

Try swapping out cables between modem and router to be sure.
Try using single mode G only to test with out any security...does it happen with this?

Changing the cable out didn't do anything but switching to G with no security did, no drops.

So it seems we've narrowed down the issue!

Does it happen if you chance to single mode N? if you have a device that supports it?

Next, I would try single mode G and turn on Security using WPA first then try using TPIK only.
Then try WPA2 and TPIK only.
Then try WPA and Auto
Then try WPA2 and Auto.

Thank you for the suggestions. After completely troubleshooting, it seems keeping it on single mode G with the WPA2 seems to work fine. The Mixed mode was causing the problem.

Could try Mixed G and N if you have any devices that support N, if not, just use G as most devices now days support G mostly and theres really no need to broadcast A or B if your not using them.
