Title: Can't install BT
Post by: oMac on January 26, 2009, 04:35:24 AM
EasySearch(v4400) won't install BT on the DNS323. The only message I got is "check you disk". There is no new volume called "BT". Any idea? I am running the latest firmware 1.06. I have a single Seagate Barracuda 1TB disk.

TIA

Hello! have you tried power cycling your DNS-323 and then re-install Bitorrent via easy search utility 4400?

Yes. I did. Many times. This is a new DNS323 (about 3 weeks). Everything works(seems to be) except BT and the Installation CD. I downloaded Easy Search and 1.06 from D-Link site. UPnP is working as well as FTP and iTunes server.

BTW, the "Loading..." message screen did pop up after I pressed the "BitTorrent" button.

One more thing, the firmware date from the TOOLS->Firmware show 12/03/2008. The firmware date from D-Link site is 12/29/2008. Which date is correct?

i cant get my BT to work either, seems like it has created a directory structure but the easysearch fails to show the BT drive after it has run,

All this worked fine before upgraded my 320gb drive to 2x1.5tb drives.  I wonder if that is the problem?

either way, there are some serious problems with the firmware in the DNS that need to be addressed the the dns team

Where did you find the directory structure? I thought a new volume suppose to be created?
Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: coxwain on January 27, 2009, 07:36:29 AM
Just use FileExplorer and pull up the network drive from the MSHOME group and you should see the directory chain.  It will then show the DNS-323 with Volume_1 and the BT directory.

I can see the BT directory but the easysearch does not show the BT active.  This worked before for me when I had 1 x 320gb drive

Now i have 2x1.5tb drives and I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I have 2 drives or that they are 1.5tb

I just noticed you are running a single 1tb drive so not sure where this problem is comming from

I am thinking my problem could be the location of my single drive. I am going to swap it to the other bay when I get home tonight or to make sure it is installed on the left bay.

I also notice another problem - fun_plug won't install. I was hoping to telnet to the box to explore more on the BT issue.

What bay is your single drive installed in?
Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: oMac on January 27, 2009, 11:22:49 AM
I think it is on the left bay, but it could be the other left.  ::)

from the 1.35 Quick Install Guide, if you're looking at the FRONT of the 323, a single drive should be installed in the left bay.  If it's in the right bay that would explain why BT won't install.

Post by: oMac on January 27, 2009, 04:45:33 PM
Okay. I moved the disk to "the other left", but BT still won't install and same thing with fun_plug. Any idea?  :(

BTW, under STATUS-> Device Info, the slot that the disk is in is slot 2. It was in slot 1. Is this correct? Or should I move the disk back to the "right" left bay?

If you have two drives, does the 2nd drive have to be set as a slave, or are they both set to master?

i opened a ticked with dlink yesterday and have not heard from them

its too bad, I had such high expectations on the 323, but I wonder if I should take it back to the store b4 my 30 days is up?

Perhaps since this is a new setup for you it would be a good idea to start from scratch:

1)  Upgrade to firmware 1.06 if you haven't done so already
2)  Make sure your HDD is in the left bay (facing the front of the 323)
3)  Reset the 323 back to factory state (the reset button on the rear of the 323)
4)  Before changing any of the settings, go to Tools -> Raid and set the raid type & reformat
5)  Once Complete, Log back in and run the Setup Wizard
6)  Use the Easy Setup Utility to install BT

There's a chance that what you've done already has committed certain changes to the hard drive that aren't reversable unless the drive is reformatted.  So start over from scratch and see if you have any better luck with it.

Thx ttmcmurry, but I already have 10G data on the DNS323. I would rather not to do the reinstall. Anyone else has any suggestion.
Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: coxwain on January 29, 2009, 09:55:52 AM
clearly there is a problem with this FW version, we shouldn't need to reset to default and then start all over.  I had to do that to get the media centre to update the files on the network.

My DNS323 creats a BT directory structure but does not show it in easy search or allow me to access it in the web browser

Dlink needs to comment on these problems.  I have emailed dlnik 2 times without a response, I suggest you do the same as they must not be reading every thread.

I can still return mine to the store for full refund, but P.O.ed b/c I just bought 2x1.5 tb drives which I cant return.

Post by: ttmcmurry on January 29, 2009, 07:10:52 PM
The point of my post wasn't supposed to make anyone feel as if you should return the 323.  Most of the configuration issues people seem to have is because a decision was made without the proper information - such as putting the drive in the wrong bay from the start.  Nothing you can do can fix that situation short of reinitializing the drive.  Using the wrong bay has been identified as a cause for things not working like bittorrent or upgrading to a raid configuration at a later date.

I can certainly understand frustration when things don't work the way we want them to-- But hey, we're human and the 323 isn't.  We can adapt but machines, not so much.  At least not at a $209 price point.  You'd have to get into devices that are incredibly expensive (from a Home/SOHO/Sm Bus perspective) for those features not to mention a staff who knows how to make said hardware work.  I'm one of those guys who makes a living as a Systems & Storage Admin and enjoys volunteering tech help to others.  Food for thought.
Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: oMac on January 29, 2009, 07:48:45 PM
Hmmm $209.00 - I think that may be the reason why BT doesn't work on my DNS323 - I only paid $120 CAD + Tax. :)

Back to the "left bay" issue. I think I had the disk in the correct "left bay" from the beginning. As I said, my disk is installed in "slot 1" - unless "slot 1" means the "right bay".
Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: coxwain on January 30, 2009, 07:02:06 AM
Mine are installed  one in each bay
I have 2x1.5tb drive, both set as master
Also JBOD format

I was on the phone with Dlink tech support last night and there is a problem with the BT software and I don't think they know how to work around it.
They are having a problem specialist call me tonight but one other troubleshooting thing they said to do was to reformat the drives and change to RAID0 or Individual disks,  (i always love that suggestion as it creates so much work to backup and restore drives)

I don't want to reformat my drives so I hope some solution comes up today.

Any yes I can return it if the product doesn't work.  While I am sure they will get this fixed at some point in the future I only have 15 days to return for full refund!  If a product doesn't do what its supposed to do you return it to the company.  We all vote with our $$ so if we return products that don't work then the company will get the message quickly.

This is not a simple configuration problem and if it is it is far to complicated to work around.  Reformating, Reseting and changed back to defaults should not be the solution to fix a device every time a change of the device has to take place.

Thanks for the info coxwain.

I only have a few hours left and I am in the office and I have no idea where I place the reciept. So, I guess I am not going to return it. When you talk to the specialist again, may you ask the specialist which slot the disk is supposed to be in when you have 1 single disk. This will help to confirm my single disk is really placed in the "left bay".

TIA

OMac The left side is the slot its supposed to be in, set the driver to MASTER as well

If you formated the drive when it was in the right bay then you might have to reformat.

If the BT is the only thing not working and you can see the directories in Win XP then its just a software/firmware problem that hopefully will be resolved soon.

My 1x320gb drive worked fine before, its the 2x1.5tb drives that are giving me the problems

How do you set the driver to MASTER?

Title: Re: Can't install BT
Post by: klein on January 30, 2009, 10:20:21 AM
it is on the physical hard drive that you set it, there is a jumper that has to be set on 2 pins, on the hard drive it will tell you which 2 pins are for master, 2 are for slave and 2 for cable select, just make sure it is on master.  most hard drive will be master by default from the manufacturer but it is something to check

How do you set the driver to MASTER?

I wend back in your post, you have a 1tb seagate,  if you look on the outside of it you will get a model #, check to see if you have a firmware update that needs to be done, since I dont know your exact model I will give you some reference points

Firmware upgrade
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/desktops/barracuda_hard_drives/
Find out which drive you have then locate the version, then make sure the  firmware on your drive is up to date.  if not update it.  See if that fixed your problem

Mast Drive: make sure you read the side of the drive as it will tell you this
http://support.seagate.com/rightnow/flash/jumperguide/Seagate_ATA_Jumper_Guide.html
go there for jumber settings, you must know your model #

Thanks coxwain.

My 1 TB is on the list. I have to upgrade the firmware. :(

My next question is how do I upgrade the firmware on the drive inside the DNS?

I dont think you can get around this, butyou are going to loose the data on that drive

give me your model # and I will find it for you if you cant within the seagate site

thanks for pointing that out, as that is the 1st I heard on that it wasnt suppored in raid as the whole point of the 1.06 update was for 1.5tb drive support

I guess I have to run two separate volums which isnt the end of the world but just a paint to backup and restore

the thing that kills me, if I go and separate the drives to 2 volumes then the come up and support 1.5tb drives in raid i have to go and back up the drives then JBOD them again.   I wonder if I should just wait?

A long time ago I learned that the road from design to reality is a long and bumpy one.

After I added the second drive I could not get things to work properly.
I pulled both drives and fdisk them in a computer to wipe out the partitions and re-installed both in the dns at the same time. All my problems were solved , but having to backup and restore the files was a pain.

Do anyone know if the binaries for the BT software differ between 4.20 and 4.40?
If they do, can someone that have succeeded to install BT via EasySearch 4.40 copy the BT folder from \Nas_Prog\ and put it somewhere so we can download it and manually install it.

I finally called DLink Tech Support this morning. I am waiting for the specialist to call me back next Mon or Tue

Can someone kindly tell me which bay = which disk slot? is left bay = disk slot 1 or disk slot 2?

BTW, I already tried reformatting the disk on both bay and install BT - but the result are the same

The disk slot information is found under the web management STATUS -> DEVICE INFO -> PHYSICAL DISK INFO:(at the bottom of the page)

coxwain,
I was able to get fun-plug installed and enabled telnet. I found a file called bt_noinst in one of the dir(don't remember the dir path, I think it's under web_pages). if you remove this file, you can activate the BT web page. Also, you should check the rc.sh script to understand how BT is started. HTH.

coxwain,
/web/bt_noinst

For those of you who are having issues with BT web interface, check out the files under /sys/crfs/web_page/bt.

Found in /etc/rc.sh
..
# wyc: check for disk and exec existense for BT
/sys/crfs/sbin/wyc_check_bt
/usr/sbin/start_bt
...

note: wyc_check_bt is a binary

My BitTorrent also stopped working for no apparent reason. I updated to the latest firmware after it stopped working hoping that would fix it, but no luck. Have tried on Mac, Win, IE, Firefox, Safari, no dice.

I also did the following:
Code: [Select]
root@NAS:/sys/crfs/sbin# ./wyc_check_bt
Can't open /tmp/onedisk file !
[2]
Step 1
Step 2

I don't have a file in /tmp called onedisk. What is this file, is it a symlink to the harddrives or something? Maybe this error is unrelated.

I was able to run:
Code: [Select]
root@NAS:/usr/sbin# ./start_bt Without any error, but it didn't get my BitTorrent back up and running...

Proton,

I downloaded the 4.2 BT for Mac and installed it manually. BT is working for me. If you have a Mac, you should try it.

Go to the Subject: "Bittorrent no longer downloads" and read the post from Rockafett to get the link.

this is still an issue with no commentary from Dlink or a product specialist calling me back or responding to my support emails

Obviosly this is  a problem but wish they would acknowledge it and give us some visibility on fix date.

Just for another data point... Same issue and indications as coxwain with me... except for the fact I didn't change out the hard drives. This is a new unit with new drives. I upgraded to 1.06 before I did anything else with the unit. Tried the BT install with Easy Search v.4.4.0.0. I have no want or desire to screw with fun_plug. It should work without having to go command line on the unit.

Other than this minor loss of functionality (I can still use μTorrent), I am very pleased with the device.

edit: Since I'm behind my router, I have no firewall installed, and windows firewall is set to "Off". Antivirus software was disabled (exited).

ECF,

I think I did that already, but I will try again this weekend. I did have BT installed using the zip for Mac from ftp.dlink.se, but I was told it's an older version. Is it possible for dlink to make the latest BT available in a zip file?

BTW, my BT stopped working last night. I guess I my at par with the rest of the gang. :(
