i've read the sticky above for settings to get to 300 and no luck, not that i'm wanting to get to 300 i just want to connect over 65m. according to the wireless status screen on the router my laptop, ipad, and 2 iphones will not connect over 65m.
i have had a DIR-655 Rev. A router for years now and had no problems connecting my laptop to it well over 150m, the iproducts never got over 65m, i'm OK with that if they just won't but i would like to get there if possible. i went out and picked up a 2nd 655 (rev B) and flashed the bios up to the newest version 2.03NA and went in and mirrored all of the settings from the original router and then replaced the old router with the new one. the old router is not being used at this time though there are plans to use it as an access point later in another part of the house. i have updated the drivers for the wireless N card on my laptop (i can't remember the name of the adapter or the model, i'll provide that when i go home for lunch today). i've tried various settings for security, (i want to use WPA2 only, personal key, AES cipher, channel width 20/40 auto) i've even tried no security and it still won't connect over 65m.
some things i've tried so far to help troubleshoot.
changed channels
looked for other routers in the area interfering (no routers)
tried to set the channel width to 40mhz on the laptop but there is no option
no real configurable options on the iproducts (big shocker there)
i'm using N/G mixed and want to continue to do that if possible but i have tried N only
i've tried using no security settings at all (open router) no luck
EDIT:
i've also tried disabling wish
i've also tried disabling QoS
neither changed anything.
no matter what i do it just will not connect over 65m on any device.
i can put my Rev A router back in service and my laptop will connect to it and soar well above 65m speeds but not on the new one.
i'm not opposed to backing down to prior versions of the firmware if that will fix my problem.
thanks

Need to make sure that your devices support WiFi connections over 54Mb and they support connections on N mode as well. I'm not sure if all Apple devices support N modes. I believe the Ipad and the iphone 4 support N mode at 2.4Ghz.
What wireless modes is the router set for now? Try single mode N with out any security to test. Then try Mixed G and N with out security. Turn security back on and check.
Some devices are set up to pick the best connection speed so even though you have Mixed modes, the device might pick G over N. Sometimes forcing N mode would be to set single mode N on the router.

all of my devices support N mode, as stated above, with the exception of my printer that uses G.
all of the devices are using N mode, confirmed in multiple locations such as the wireless status screen and on the devices themselves.
i have already tried your last 2 suggestions as i had listed above.
again the laptop was and still is able to connect to my old router at speeds over 65m, it's only on the new router that it never gets over 65m.
thanks

well i just plugged the old router in just to double check my speeds, verified them and then put the new one back in line and now it's showing 167m+ in the wireless status screen for a couple of seconds, then it drops to 65m and stays there.

Possible you might try setting the channel scan, channel and maybe width to manual. It looks like the device is connecting at the higher speed however is falling back to slower speed due to something.
Any other Wifi in the area?
Any cordless phones?

there is one other wireless router in the area that i can occasionally see but it's signal is so low i can't connect to it, there are 2 wireless phones in the house both of which run on 5ghz and 6ghz respectively so there is no issue there.
i had the auto scan on my old router and it set my channel to 11 and left it there for years so i just set this one manually.
my wireless settings are as follows.
N/G mixed modes
transmission rate: (best auto)
channel width: (auto 20/40) (the only other choice is 20 only)
sec. mode: WPA-Personal
WPA mode:WPA2 only
cypher type: AES
group update inter.:3600 seconds

my wireless adapter in the laptop is Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n wifi adapter

Try setting transmission rate to manual. Best transmission rate is probably falling back the the best transmission it can do for the LT.
Also,
What are your Advanced/Wireless settings currently?
Disable WLAN Partition and Short GI.

i'll look at the emulator and see if i can remember what they are but i'm back at work so i can't post them for sure till i go home at 5.
as far as setting the wireless settings goes, what should i set it to? and will it have any effects on wireless range?
one other thing that i started thinking about on the drive back to work was that my laptop adapter has both the ip4 and the ipv6 checked in the config, and i want to think the status page has both a ip4 and an ip6 IP addresses listed, that would be the only difference between my old router and the new one, the old one didn't support ip6. could this be the issue or something worth looking into, i hate to start removing configurations for internet adapters as i've been bitten by this in the past.

looking at the emulator page i think it's exactly like you see here http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655_revB/201/adv_wlan_perform.html (http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/dir655_revB/201/adv_wlan_perform.html) when i get home i'll uncheck that and give it a try.

Ok, let us know. Just seems like it can see the higher speed however something is causing the LT to fall back to something slower. This could be something in the WiFi properties on the LT too. See if there is any WiFi radio settings there too.
What OS version is loaded on the LT?
Ensure the drivers are up to date too.

i've looked for wifi radio settings on the laptop and i can't really find anything other than an "adhoc 11n" setting that is normally disabled, i tried enabling it with no results.
the LT has win 7 64-bit
and all drivers are up to date, i updated them last night when i started troubleshooting this.

Ok, let us know what you find out with those other settings.
-
i've tried all of these suggestions so far and have no results, it still connects at 65mb regardless of what i do. i tried the manual setting for the broadcast and couldn't get the laptop or any of my other devices to connect at all.

Did you ever get this working over 65mbps? I just got this router and am having the same issue. (RevB with current firmware)
I'm beginning to forget what all I've done but I think I was able to get 130mbps with no security. But when I enabled WPA-PSK-AES I'm only getting 65mbps?
And on my desktop that is on the 2nd floor (router is on the 1st) I wasn't even able to connect. Signal strength was really weak. But my old Linksys G router (blue and black model - OLD) was working fine? I was expecting the range to be way better on this Xtreme N router than my 6 year old Linksys.
I just downloaded a Wifi Analyzer app on my phone and am going to check the signal strengths between the two routers tonight.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and AES only.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Hi Celatid,
Did you buy matching Wireless Desktop adapters to match the Router you are using? A Salesperson, may say, it works, but does not guarantee a high-speed connection to the Router.
Install a matching Wireless Adapter on one of your computers and see what happens.

i wasn't ever able to get this to work properly, but in my adventure to find a router that works i've discovered what is most likely the culprit.
my old rev A router was draft N and it didn't have the "good neighbor policy" that prevents N routers from channel bonding if it sees another router in the area that is on one of the channels that your router would bond to. i had a neighbors router that was on channel 6 and even though the signal was so low at my router's location is still saw it and dropped my bonding. i've gotten the neighbor to change his channel to 1 but it's still not letting me bond properly. right now i've got a netgear N750 and am to the point of giving up and using DD-WRT. it's a firmware that is produced by a group of programmers for multiple router makes and models, one of the features is that you can disable the good neighbor policy and it will bond properly regardless.
now in your case, if you can bond with no encryption but it gets slow when you enable it then it sounds like you are using the wrong encryption type, you have to use WPA2 with N clients.

Hi,
Forgive for asking this but.... Are you using 65m as in meters (distance) ? OR as in MegaBits Per Second (data speeds) ?
I just have not seen the use of "65" for a speed rating myself.
My iPhone 3GS and my kids ipod touchs all use .11G (54 Mbps max) for wifi....
Just curious....

The same here,
The good neighbor policy on the DIR_655 is very bad for me, maybe nice for the neighbors.
Before i have a DIR-635 with 10/100 lan the wireless working very fast.
Now with the DIR-655 it is very bad 65 mbps i have a internet connection 120 mbit and the fastest i get wireless is around 60 mbit.
My old router i'm getting around 80~90 mbit it's the max for the wan side. So it was a lot faster. Thank you d-link!!!
I going to use my old one and trow this one away if there is no solution for the slow wireless. :(
-
Make sure your N wireless is using 40
Mhz not 20 (two channels not single)..
Since you are saying you are getting only
about half of your ISP speed on wireless,
that would be my guess...
I have my 655 set for 40 with several others
nearby and it holds 40 no problem.
I used one of those wifi sniffer tools to
Choose my wifi channels on less use channels
like 3 & 7.... That seemed to help keep
mine at 40 mhz with no neighbor issues.

Hi Vespa,
You are not going to be getting 300 Mbps connection if viewed from the Router, if not a D-link Wireless Adapter that works with the DIR-655 Router.
With that said, these are the settings for the D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Tab.
Choose your 802.11 Mode, that includes 802.11n.
Uncheck Enable Auto Channel Scan.
Pick Wireless Channel 11. (For me, that produces the highest speed.)
Transmission Rate: Best (automatic)
Channel Width: Auto 20/40 Mhz
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA2 Only
Cipher Type : AES
Group Key Update Interval : 3600 seconds

Through trial and error (2-weeks) I discovered that the above same settings posted by "thecreator" resolved my connection and speed issues (300mbps), but ONLY after I dumped my PCE N13, ASUS(N) adapter and installed the compatible D-Link, DWA-556 adapter.
Post Script *Throw in an Extender-DAP-1360 and now you've got real setup issues ;)

Wonder what the Asus NIC was doing that messed up your wireless LAN ?
