For the last week or so I have been having issues in re: to choppy playback for audio and video, as well as a connection speed drop from a consistent 300 Mbps to 54 - 48Mbps range. I have not installed any new software recently, nothing that I can think of to account for any changes to the performance of the wireless router. Could this be due to an update to firmware? I see there is one available, but I am hesitant to go through the process, as the last time, there were considerable complications with the update. Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll be fine upgrading firmware ;D If you're a bit hesitant there are FAQ's on the support site. Not really much FAQ in the revB link but you can go to rev A and refer to the FAQ's listed there. Of course you will be upgrading with rev B firmware ;)

I have just attempted to update firmware - followed all instructions precisely and received the following message:
The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.
If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators can upload new firmware.
The Gateway will not be reprogrammed.
Any advice? I have tried three times, making sure I was logged in as ADMIN, and ensuring that I selected the appropriate BIN file, downloaded to my desk top.

What's the name of the FW you downloaded and what version?
