Title: Thicko question
Post by: t121anf on July 29, 2011, 12:50:09 PM
i have just setup my DNS-320, no problem seeing the drives, although I found it odd that on first format it did them as standard not raid1 as per my request....anyway.

now I have Raid1 setup, what happens if I remove either drive?  will it just copy the data from the other or will it leave it be?

only reason I ask is I want to see what happens if I try to access the data held on the drives in an external usb enclosure, just in case the nas fails, not moving loads of vital information (pictures etc) onto a raid configuration until i know its retrievable (somehow)

thanks in advance

ps, i assume this is hot swappable providing no read/writes are taking place

I wouldn't like to try hot swapping the drives.

Yes you can unplug one of the drives, with the NAS switched off, and put it in a spare SATA slot in your computer or into a USB/SATA caddy.

Now, if you are running windows the fun begins.  You need to get an installable file system driver that will allow you to read Ext3fs - without it you will see nothing.

If, on the other hand, you are using linux then you should be able to read the drive with out problems.

If you remove a drive  and then reinstall it the drive that remained in the unit will act as the master and its contents will be copied to the other drive.

the contents will be copied across even if the data is the same?

That's a good question. I don't know if it will have to rebuild in that case.
If you try, please tell us!

Yes, under "management" > "disk management", it will tell you "Volume_1 : RAID 1 (Completed )" if everything's fine, or "Volume_1 : RAID 1 (Degraded )" if you need to rebuild!
