Hello, I have the DIR-655 router hooked up and it has done the trick for about over a year now. I recently upgraded my internet (I am on Rogers Cable) and they sent me a heavy duty router/modem combo called the SMCD3GN, it has four ports and wireless N and the whole bit, but I continued to just plug it into my DIR and use it as a normal modem (it has an option to make it just a modem) this was a problem at first but it works fine now. Well worked fine, yesterday when I came home from work my internet wasn't working at all. The router lights are on and blinking crazy fast, and I unplugged my desktop, and voila! Everything started working again, wifi, game consoles. Every time I plug in my desktop though, it works for a minute or two then everything shuts down, you can't even access the internet or router config page from anything. If I take the same ethernet cable and plug it into a laptop (like it is now), it works fine. So it seems as though the router just decided it can't handle having my desktop plugged in? The desktop is a piece by piece built computer by me running Windows 7 Professional, I can't seem to find any setting anywhere to fix this. Do I need a new router? Or do I have to run cable to the basement and just use the D3GN alone.

It could be that your computer is infected with malware that is using up so much bandwidth that your network is becoming overloaded. If the lights blink that means network activity, so something is eating up all you bandwidth on your pc.
I would try restarting your pc, router, modem, and do a virus/malware scan on your pc.

I don't think it is that, because the computer's performance in running offline programs is still great, and task manager shows little network activity (no more than usual), and little to none CPU usage. Also I just hooked up a really old Dlink router (WBR-1310, piece of junk) and it works completely fine. So I'm guessing there's something that needs to be configured between my computer and router? Or maybe the router is just done.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.

I believe I answered the first three questions in my original post.
Every setting you mentioned is already like that except for the QoS and Firewall settings, I'll try those
I have been through the wireless settings in every way possible through the several resets I've done, never seemed to help.

Is the Rogers Cable/Modem/Router combo have a built in WiFi by change?
Any other Wifi routers in the area?
This modem router you got from Rogers, does it have voice for phone?
Its recommended not to have 2 routers on the same network as it can cause connection issues.

It has wifi but it his disabled, there are no other wifi networks and nothing wireless in the area besides my home phones, and it does not have phone in it at all. The modem has the whole router part disabled by Rogers because I asked for it to be just a modem, it does not work as a router at all anymore.

Under Status/Device Info/Wan section are you getting a ##.##.###.### or a 192.168.#.# IP address?
Try single mode G and Auto Cipher settings to test for now. Then got to Mixed G and N.

QoS and Firewall didn't change anything, still just plugged in, internet works for about two seconds then nothing for anyone
To be sure I tried disabling the whole wireless aspect... still plugged in and got complete lock up.
My ip shows up as 99.251.#.#

What FW is currently loaded?
Have you done a factory reset since this started and tested?

I can't swap the cable its a 50' cable run through walls and outside and such. But again it works fine with the old crappy router...
The newest FW, 1.35 (newest for revision A)

Only way to test it out if you could take this router to a different location like a friends house or neighbors and see if the issue tracks If it does, then I would call up Dlink for RMA.

My dad has the identical model, we bought it at the same time, I was thinking of swapping it with him and seeing if his does anything for me, but that would be a lot of work and I won't be there for quire a while.
Is it even possible to RMA it now? It's got to be over a year old and I'm guessing warranty's only a year.

Well I don't think the RMA is possible as warranty is only a year, I just checked, and that is with a registration within 90 days (which I never did). I sent DLink an email, hopefully I'll get results on that. Otherwise I guess I'll have to rewire the house and use my modem as a router too, or maybe go get a new router.

in case your dad has special settings on his router, you can do a save configuration on the router for easy backup and restore. Same for yours too. You can load his settings from this file on your router then go online with it at his house and see how it works. Keep us posted.

Yes I know I've actually swapped them before about 8 months ago, the one I have now is his. They both have had factory resets since then as he moved and everything just needed to get reset and I set his up so getting all that figured out shouldn't be a problem, it's just I'm not gonna be there for quite a while.

Okay, I finally fixed the problem!
After trying to plug in the old WBR to use as a temporary router, the same thing happened with that, even though I'm almost sure it worked before. Then I noticed 15% CPU activity, a little odd for complete idle, so I opened up task manager and sure enough there was some program with a name that seemed a bunch of random letters that was taking up about 10% of CPU. Closed that, and voila! Internet worked. So looks like I have a virus, and the virus program I used before apparently sucks! Got a new one now and running a scan, already found some things. Gotta be more careful!

Good that you found the problem man...usually things like that don't effect internet, however sometimes they do. I also recommend running MalwareBytes to double check. Hope you can get it cleaned up and it works well for you after that.
