Title: Automatic updating of files

Ok, so I may be wrong here but I thought I read that this device can automatically update files. Is this possible on a home network? I have searched for information on how to do it but have not found anything other than references which suggest it can be done. Any help would be appreciated. :)

I don't think anything is done automatically, it is more a scheduled process with a defined interval between process execution.

Would you describe your environment, the source and destination of the files and expected frequency of the backup.  Thanks

Additional thought:  Are you thinking about RAID 1 storage where data sent to the DNS-323 is automatically written to both drives?  The DNS-323 drives can be configured in a RAID 1 environment.

Thanks for the reply. Scheduling would be just fine if I knew how to do it. I have the DNS configured as RAID 1, and am operating three computers on a home network under Windows 7. All three computers are using Windows 7 Home Edition, and are connected through a Dir-628 Router.

The files I wish to continually update and backup are picture files my wife, who is a prolific photographer, keeps adding to her laptop. A monthly backup would be ideal if I could do it. Thanks

Hopefully the Microsoft users will give you the best suggestions.  My wife uses Windows 7 and her computer came with Norton 360.  Your systems may already have software that will meet your needs.

Define "automatically update files".

This is a storage device - it stores data, it has no way of knowing if those data files are up-to-date, or out-of-date.

Tell your wife to keep the files on the NAS and not her laptop for starters....

The DNS-323 has a scheduled backup utility program you can use, or you can install software on the laptop to schedule the back up specific folders and files (plenty of freeware is available for this).  Probably best for you to use the latter option as it is scheduled and you can set it to "incremental backup" which means it will only backup files which are newer on the laptop than what is in the backup file/folder on the NAS.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe the "incremental backup" can only be used with "local" or DNS-323 to itself backups.

I'm not sure how the DNS back-up utility functions with incremental.  I personally use a software on my laptop for backing up incrementally to the DNS.  Works just fine.
