Title: Download/Upload speeds slow after new router
Post by: twofourzero on August 12, 2011, 11:34:29 PM
I just purchased the DGL 4500 because I moved my computer to another room but the wife still wanted internet access. Where I moved my computer to has a direct line from the incoming cable to the house (should be a cleaner/better signal) with no TV's etc. on the line. The run is only about 20ft as well. In the old room on a Linksys router (walmart special) with another computer on it I was getting an avg of 17 mbs down and 2 upload. After installing the DLG 4500 I now have an avg of 5 down and 1.3 upload. What gives?

Are you testing wired or wireless connection?
What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2 and Cipher type to AES only if your device support this.

I was testing the wired network , not the wireless. I have never set up a wireless router before so please bare with me.

Let me back up a bit, when I first inserted the cd and went through the setup the computer was initially contected to the internet through the modem. During the setup, I followed eveything on screen as it said but during it the router said it could not detect the internet and said to contact my ISP. Well that is pointless as it was/is working without the router. It asked it I wanted to configure anyways and I did. The only way I could get online was to navigate to the web based setup screen. Until that point I couldn't navigate to any other pages, but after the internet worked fine, albiet slower than normal.

My modem is stand alone (Ambit model:u10c018.80) and my ISP is Charter. I removed the router again and my upload/download went back to normal.

I am very sorry if you are beating your head against something at this point but to further pain you...I have no idea what "DNS IP addresses" are let alone how to even change the modes on this thing. Thank you very much for your response and patience in this matter!!!

You should let Furry use TeamViewer to go over your settings.  He's great at setting up these things and is, of course, very trustworthy.

He's already helped me twice with mine.  You'd pay someone from GeekSquad probably $100 to do what he does for free.  He knows these routers like the back of his hand.

You know at this point I would be willing to try almost anything, the wife is breathing down my neck about getting her comp on the net after moving my gaming comp downstairs where it is cooler ;D

I am by no means a guru, more like a novice thats gets into trouble ;D That being said I now have the internet at faster speeds than the first time, but am still showing 5meg slower than my avg without the router....nothing but my comp is on it at present (no wireless). Any ideas why I am losing 5meg download?

To get things running I had to improvie the "quick setup" meaning at step 5? I think (the one where you plug the router into the modem and it detectsa the internet connection) It was at this point that it would never find my internet, but here I unplugged everything, powered on the modem and let it boot, then plugged the ethernet to the router...let the two talk and then powered on the router to continue...presto...internet...just slower than normal.

Here is the teamviewer download.  http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/index.aspx (http://www.teamviewer.com/en/download/index.aspx)

Just download it and then send Furry a PM.  I think Hard Harry could help you, too.

Yea, I am always down for some remote action. I am just not on here ALL that much compared to before. If you see me on, feel free to ask though.

Ha!  Now that's a good one!  About the only thing I could do is turn wireless on or off and maybe configure WPA2.   :P

Waht are you streaming videos from and what are you using?
Might check the Enable Multi Media streams under Advanced/Networking.
Streaming videos over wired or wireless?

it is mainly from youtube, but sme flash vids have had issues. I am streaming them wired.

@xs the fix was this, I paused the intitial setup at the point where you plug in the modem to the router. at that point I powered everything off (router and modem) powered on the modem (w/out ethernet plugged into router) let it boot then plugged in the ethernet cable in thr router and "let them talk" for several seconds before powering on the router. My issue was at this point in the setup it would not find my internet connection. Well apparently letting the modem talk to the router helped it out. The setup found the internet and everything worked after that.

as for the speed thing, well it comes and goes...no sooner did i post everything was ok and stuff goes wonky

ok furry, multi media streams did not work. a few questions about the other stuff though

setting reserved IP's for other devices (ie. wife's comp) how do I do that under the network settings?

where it says add reservation there is a drop down menu that looks like it has my wife's comp info there, will that work or do I have to go up to her comp find the IP then input it? it looks like it has the IP and mac there? do I have to setup my own PC there too?

I have manually put in the DNS servers, but under DHCP server setting is "WINS IP primary and secondary" do I unput anything here and if so what?

To sound like a total noob, what is QoS option?

Do I need to change my MTU at all?

Twofour,
Odd I had a very similar issue, put the set up disk in and ran the wizard and my internet connection would never be found and then stop installing.  So I just turned off the router, did a complete reset on my modem.  Turned on my modem, waited 30 seconds, turned on my router and all good.

At the bottom of the Networking settings, there is a Dynamic Clients list, your wifes PC should be listed there, select the Reserve word link in that row, this will auto fill in the Add Reservation section above. Can change the name to be easier to identify here. Then select ADD.

I have manually put in the DNS servers, but under DHCP server setting is "WINS IP primary and secondary" do I unput anything here and if so what?Leave the WINS alone. Nothing configured here.

To sound like a total noob, what is QoS option? Quality Of Service. You wont see this on the DGL routers however Gamefuel is another name for it. You'll see QoS on DIR series routers.

Do I need to change my MTU at all? If your on cable, 1500 is default. If your on DSL, try 1492.

I am starting to wonder if I have the same issue.  I just changed from VDSL to cable so I have no "before" to compare it to.
However, I noticed running speedtests at peak times, my DL will change from 5 meg to over 20 meg by just re-running it a couple of times, sometimes it only gets to to 13 meg.  It changes at peak times.
What time of day are you running these speedtests and what website?

I still can't get youtube vids to stream properly....it happens when I try to watch anything in 1080p.

Are you streaming over wired or wifi when your doing 1080p? If wifi it's recommended to use the 300Mb N connection for streaming. What other settings on the router are you using?

wired, there are two other devices on the router (wireless) but none are on when I am trying to stream.

other setting...any more specific?

I turned on multicast streams (off didn't work either)
firewall is set to endpoint for both
on apllication level gateway all four are checked (PPTP, IPSec, RTSP, SIP)
spoof checking is on

Gamefuel set up, WISH? items like this?
Where are you streaming from? Netflix or home server? Shouldn't be having problems. I stream from my boxee and PCs all the time with out trouble.

Any 3rd party security SW running while steaming? Firewall or AV?

Care to let someone remote in and check your router out?

update, I stream most anything just fine. It is when I try to view in 1080p that it doesn't work anymore?

Might have someone check your router settings out via teamviewer.com...
