It is Monday and I may be on crack, but perhaps it'd be nice to have a broad thread/topic that serves as a starting point for the seemingly few Mac owners out there that have shunned the Airport Extreme and other Apple branded network devices to use the D-Link DIR-655.
Yes, we Mac users both drink and pass out the Kool-Aid. What can we say? But we also know a good thing when we see it, or in this case, hear about it through ''word of mouth'', like the DIR-655.
Either way, since we seem to be a minority, perhaps this ''welcome'' thread could serve as a ''lobby'' (or group therapy session) to discuss and troubleshoot broad issues arising that are specific to our platform
As topics become focused -- they could then be ''spun off'' into their own thread, again with Mac - tacked onto the beginning of the topic subject/title (like this topic which is titled Mac - Macintosh Owners Start Here.
Again, this seems like a good idea on a Monday morning...;D

Good move

So, any news on Macintosh support for the DIR-655 USB port?
Is a beta version of the Mac Shareport Utility available for download?
-
I'm a mixed owner, PC and Mac. It's just a royal pain in the ass not to have a Mac shareport app. Let's go D-Link! And what's with D-Link not sharing their plans for this type of thing? Can't someone just tell us that it's in the works?
-
No we can not. Because if we tell you it's coming and then decide to scrap it, it could be bad legally.
-
The USB port is the entire reason I bought the DIR-655 instead of an Airport Extreme Base Station, with which it appears to be designed to compete.
I bought it from MACConnection, the DIR-655 design is obviously very MAC-like, and I thought I did my due diligence before purchase as to it being entirely MAC-compatible, including checking the D-Link web site for updates. This borders on false advertising. Silly me, assuming that recent firmware and software updates meant that Mac versions were on the way. When was this product first released?
I'm surprised that someone hasn't written a little app to enable this functionality and posted it on Macupdate.com. How hard can it be? (I don't know how, not a programmer, or I would).
You can be sure that if Mac support is not coming very soon, that I will never buy another D-Link product again, regardless of what platform I am using at the time.
-
Another Mac owner here. Actually, I'm versed in several operating systems as well as the binary language of moisture vaporators... ooops, I'm projecting again. ;D
But seriously, I do have many different systems on my net: Mac OS X, XP, Windows 7, Linux, Maemo OS2008, and my fave, OpenVMS. (Yes, this is in my home... What can I say? total g33k... :D )
I'm not particularly interested in the SecureSpot, and already have dabbled with OpenDNS (still haven't decided if I like it enough to keep it.)
I picked the DIR-655 because of the near-industrial strength features, like the syslogd, configurable NTP client, DShield support, and especially the Guest Zone. But I'm kinda flummoxed by the web filtering, hence my visit to these forums today.
Just don't forget about us Mac users! Oh, and at first blush, I'm tickled with the level of acceptance shown to Mac users on these forums -- stuff that would have started flame wars on other forums (e.g., "I own a Mac") are totally taken in stride here. Kudos...
-
Speaking of Kudos, that is a fine piece of Nokia hardware you have there.
I have a N770 myself, if only to make everyone I know wonder why I need so many toys. My OS load out is much the same as yours, though I dare say we might just qualify as power-users (in the Timmy Power-Gamer legacy) of sorts.
As far as Mac acceptance, it is just another *nix, and my job here is to push *nix acceptance, unfortunately I also nominated myself forum flametroll so it's a mixed bag.
P.S. I got my new MacBook a couple weeks ago and an kind of worried I am going to end up buying it a ring.
-
I to am a mac user! hip hip hooray! j/k :P Not really doing anything fancy with it just for music/video production.
-
I've been extremely happy with my DIR-655. Actually, its the first router I've ever owned that I can say that.
Still, I was disappointed when I got it home last year and found out that that USB port wasn't usable for a printer or storage.
I was THRILLED to see that D-Link was expanding the capabilities of the usb port. Frankly, I was about to switch over to Apple's router (only because I wanted wireless connectivity for Time Machine). But I'll wait for a little bit to see what D-Link can do for us Mac users.
If they can get us NAS capabilities, I will forever be a DLink fan.
Lets go D-link! Give us some attached storage!
Show us that you can keep up support for old hardware, and I'll keep going out and buying your new stuff.
Lucien.

Geez, bad move there if you bought the dir-655 JUST for the usb port. :S maybe a simple usb hub for a fraction of the cost would have been a better move. :P
-
I have an iPhone that I use to connect to my DIR-855/DIR-655/DGL-4500/DIR-825 wirelessly, therefore, I am a Apple user (or loser) as well?
right guys?

LOL you stole my post. HA! Also Macintosh is a respectable and valued platform in the computing industry/community.

If I can't run software that doesn't allow me to use the phrase "Boom, headshot!" it isn't a valuable platform. (in my book).
On a lighter note, Apple FTW! (or something)
-
I am sure you could find a flash soundboard that would say "Boom, Headshot" for you. Since Flash is the new Java apparently.
Compile once, run anywhere a proprietary (yet freely distributed) VM has been compiled for.

Wireless printing from laptop, ::), unless you are suggesting a wireless usb hub. Cheapest one I've found is 4 or 5 ports for $60.

I just have a desktop that is going to be on regardless dedicated to the role of print and file server. It serves my needs at no additional cost. It also doesn't put overhead on my router. It plays friendly regardless of OS and is a torrent master, webserver, and workstation besides.
-
I'm a mac user also.
My DIR-655 works great, for raw speed, and windows machines seem to have no problems with it anymore.
However, any of my linux/mac boxes that use multicast to talk to each other using mdns (including my printers) have intermittent complete and total lookup failure for no reason I can coherently track down. Other than to determine that the DIR-655 itself is the problem (by swapping its predecessor back into the network as the gateway).
I do like the speed, but going along all fast is great, until one machine on the network experiences the mdns lookup failure that then seems to spread like cancer to all the others. Then they all fail to be able to lookup .local domains for an hour or so. Very frustrating.
I don't actually use USB, wireless or securespot at all, just the wired switch and WAN port.
-

No additional cost except for the power consumption and noise. I can hear the fan in my desktop in the next room when it is on. I forgot what silence was until I got a laptop and turned off the desktop. I don't play online games so overhead isn't really an issue, except maybe for VOIP.
The router has a USB port which should work with my system. It does not work, and that fact was not clearly advertised or stated at D-Link or MacConnection where it was purchased. I should not have to work around that. D-Link should provide the software to make the USB port work, at least with a printer. Clearly it was designed to appear to function like the Apple Extreme Base Station with USB port, but it is a fraud.
I hope D-Link resolves this easily correctible issue before they get hit with another class action suit. Seems they didn't learn much from the last one.

Is the DP-301U Print Server Mac-compatible? Where can I find the list of printers it supports?
Literature says it is configured with a web-based utility, or for Windows, an optional PS Admin utility that is included.
This is an Ethernet-to-USB print server. It is older than the DIR-655. If it can be configured via a web browser, why can't the same be done for the USB port on the DIR-655?
-
We are talking about 2 completely different devices which bear no relation other than the fact that they both have a USB port and an Ethernet port.
The DP-301U is a print server, it's dedicated job is printer sharing via LPR.
The DIR-655 is a router which has a 3rd party utility to allow it to share a USB port over a network interface using a closed and proprietary protocol.
Do you see how those two are completely different?
I am done on this thread, enjoy your router.
-
Is the DP-301U Print Server Mac-compatible? Where can I find the list of printers it supports?
This question remains unanswered.
-
It's a print relay device. It has nothing to do with the device being Mac compatible, it has EVERYTHING to do with the Mac drivers for the printer in question supporting post script printing and network printing.
A lot of times a CUPS version driver is needed.
That being said you'd need a windows machine to configure it.
Not to mention when this device was released D-Link was a Windows company, while we listed Mac compatibility it wasn't as focused on.
-
I registered specifically so I could post regarding the lack of Shareport Utility for Mac issue. We searched long and hard for the right router for our mixed OS network and are very happy with the DIR-655, but now that we are adding a USB drive to the network I'm pretty upset that we can't use it with our Macs. Please - we bought this router because everything else about it IS compatible with Macs; with the recent surge in popularity of the Mac OS I'm really surprised that you haven't addressed this issue yet. We will get it set up so at least we can use it with the pee cees, but I really need that functionality with my Mac (and I'm the family sysadmin.)

the latest version of firmware for the 655 is suppose to have Mac+Shareport compatibility. Once I get the ok, the code will be posted for beta release.
-
Hooray and thank you! I look forward to checking out the 1.30 release of Shareport!
-
Cheers! I'm very excited about the new upcoming Mac Compatible FW release! Thanks TONS to the D-Link team for making this a priority.

All the Mac users rising up and make one big wave!
I'm also a Mac user and my concern is, that the future beta release 1.30 in the EU is a way behind, because they only make final releases available.
Sure I'll could try (every) US beta version but the warranty issue worries me, in case of an hardware failure. ???
-
So I found the Sharepoint for Mac but heck if I know how to install it. I've never seen anything like this before after it is unzipped. No manual or other instructions either.

Hi there,
I have the same concern as Henk 55 - I would like to move our Home/office away from seperate backup hard drives for each computer, and to keep my 655 and use it with a single back up hard drive would be perfect, but how long will we have to wait for the EU version?

One thing I've noticed with this Shareport for Mac ''beta'' (I guess that's what we're calling it now) is that it ''seems'' to work in theory but practically it doesn't.
I connected a flash drive to the USB--and Shareport ''saw'' it but where the heck is it in Finder? How does one utilize it? The drive is formatted in FAT for compatibility.
I also had problems printing to my HP DeskJet 932C. Again it ''saw'' the printer but did not print. This, however, I chalk up to the ''asynchronous'' issue since the specs indicate ''IEEE 1284-Centronics parallel compatible; Universal Serial Bus.''
By the way, if you're enlightened enough on how to install this--knowing which package installer to use since there's no ''read me'' of any sort--the ''Help'' menu once you have it installed is fairly ''helpful.'' However, if I were the D-Link developers, I'd just simply include this as a separate HTML or text file along with the ZIP file--and add some instructions on how to install.
ALSO: Are there any plans to allow Shareport (any platform) to facilitate a USB Bluetooth device? I have this RocketFish USB Bluetooth ''nub'' that works great on my desktop Mac. This after-market device is far cheaper than the spec Apple Bluetooth card. It would be nice to see this workable on the DIR-655 as well.
-
I hate to ask the simplest questions but when it "saw" your drive and printer did you see it as status connected?
The default configuration is to auto connect to every device (which I turned off immediately as I disagree with that as a default action). However if it did not connect for some reason (say multiple devices all trying to auto connect at once and all but 1 fail) I could see you ending up not being the connected host.
Once I connected I had storage devices populate to the finder just fine. I did not personally test a printer but it should have shown in your printer list to pick a driver for it.

Pretty sure it's the asynchronous communication thing per the specs on the printer. It was the only USB device connected.
I did the flash drive separately. One would think it would show up in the Finder--but it didn't. I don't know what that was about. It would connect and show connected in the SharePort Utility but I didn't/don't know how to access it.
I had also changed the settings in the SharePort Utility window to set it to not automatically connect USB devices. I then set the printer/device itself (by Command-clicking) it so that it would connect to print only.
Again, in theory it probably would have worked if the parallel communication thing had not been an issue.

New mac & D-Link user here (but have a good record track win Win & Unix systems).
Since I want to use the USB shareport functionality of the router, I installed the Beta firmware last night. No problems for any Wi-Fi related stuff. The shareport utility is working fin Win my WinPC machine, I can see the rinter and the HardDrive when they are connected to the router.
However, the Mac is another story. Let start by saying that I'm running Leopard (OS X 10.5.6) on a MacBook.
I could not find a way to open a port on the Mac firewall to allow traffic from/to the shareport utility. So I disabled the firewall. Once the firewall is down, I can see the router on the shareport utility, but every time I want to connect (the HD or the printer) I have an error message saying that Shareport could not connect it.
So I connected the HD and printer directly to the mac to make sure they are OK with the mac, everything is perfect! Put them back onto the USB port of the router... no avail, same error. So I think there are still some work to do on the Shareport utility for Mac.
I'm wondering if I miss something...
Is anyone here successfully connected something from their mac machine using the shareport utility?
-
new Macbook (5,1) running 10.5.6, it installed fine and I connected fine.
I was wirelessly associated (shipping internal adapter) to a DIR-655 running 1.30. I tested a USB Mass Storage Device (thumbdrive) which populated to my finder just fine. I don't have a printer on my desk so I didn't test it with a printer.
The Mac firewall defaults to off and if fairly rigid in it's configuration, if it is down there should be nothing standing in your way.
Do I need to see about creating a well screenshoted or perhaps even video output log of the process from install to association? I can't guarantee it will be an instant process to gather, but if it is necessary, it can be accomplished.
-
Hey fatMan! thnaks for the response!
At least now I know it works for someone. Can yo tell us which files you ran to install the Shareport utility for the Mac (once the zip file is expanded, which one you picked to proceed with the install?).
A step by step guide (video! WOW) would be quite useful for many mac users, I'm sure. Since I was able to do it on my PC and you confirmed that the Mac Shareport utility work, I'm now wondering if I did install the right piece of software...
Thanks
-
ShareportUtility/ShareportUtility/ShareportUtility_10_4.mpkg is the ticket.
-
Alright, I believe it's the one I used, but anyhow, I re-installed it and for some reason now I can connect (so it does work). However, I'm having some connection timeout/disconnect/freeze problems. For now I will blame the beta phase of Shareport. Hopefully things will get more robust in the final release.
-
Good to hear we are all starting to arrive on solid ground.
-
I've been having connection issues since I installed the Mac Shareport Utility but after installing mpkg 10.4, it was mostly resolved.
Now I can connect to printer (and print) and external HD (backs up no problem) but once the print job is completed, it doesn't disconnect as per the preference settings but my 2 WinXP's and Win Vista machines disconnect after printing.
Any suggestions?

Interesting. I have two systems: I have a Power Mac G5 (PowerPC line) 1.8GHz with OS 10.5.6 (up-to-date). The last time I did any sort of re-loading the OS/clean install/whatever was a couple years or more back.
The second I have a less than one-year-old MacBook Pro 17-inch 2.6 Intel Core 2 Duo with OS 10.5.6 (up-to-date). I just recently had to re-load everything and did it properly using the Combined updater rather than individual updates (except for the little ones since the combo).
So, when I put the Sony USB drive into the DIR-655 with firmware 1.31 and Mac SharePort 1.01 installed on each machine, the Sony USB drive populates the Finder when connected to the G5 but does not on the new MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Pro is of course running on the wireless while the G5 is hard-connected to the DIR-655. Is doesn't seem to be a wireless issue because I hard-connected via Ethernet with the MacBook Pro to test this and it still didn't connect. I get an error--and the USB drive is not connected to any other machine via SharePort.
I will try the re-install of SharePort to hopefully resolve this issue but other than that, any ideas?
-
I wondered if any Mac users had moved to 1.31 and had their problems with the shareport resolved, or tried the move and still had the same problems?
-
The problem I think is with the utility or MacBook... I've upgraded to 1.31, still have connection issues. :-\
-
The problem I think is with the utility or MacBook... I've upgraded to 1.31, still have connection issues. :-\
I have a little Sony USB drive/RAM stick that automatically connects when I first insert it into the DIR-655, but then maybe a couple hours or so later, it disconnects ''incorrectly'' and I get the dialog about media being removed improperly--which it wasn't.
As for my printer: It's an older HP DeskJet 932C which works perfectly if connected to a Mac or for another Mac on the network if the Mac it's connected to shares it (on the network via the DIR-655)--however--it does not work if connected directly to the DIR-655. The network and SharePort ''see'' it fine and it can be configured to connect only when printing rather than automatically--but as for actual printing--no dice. Now, I did read that the printer must either support or not support asynchronous communication (can't remember) but I do recall checking this and finding out I was out of luck. Hard to imagine though actually that if a USB device works on the network itself via another computer that it can't work connected to the DIR-655.
Anyway, I'm sure there are glitches that need to be ironed out still yet since we Mac users are only now being allowed into the ''club.''
-
Thanks guitren & summerstormpictures. Let us hope these shareport problems relating to certain Mac computers & certain types of printer or backup medium get sorted sometime. I feel it may be a while though! :(
I will stick to my 1.21 for now & see!
Cheers,
Sandman

Hey all,
Hardcore multi-platform (love the mac the most) all around geek here! I can vouch for the problems being experienced with the v1.31 firmware update, and the v1.01 MacShare Utility on both Tiger & Leopard. Hopefully we will get enough posts here in the forum to warrant bringing some good change about to correct these issues.
Currently, my most stable 655 is running v1.21. My other 655 that was upgraded and tested with v1.31 sits in the corner in shame, turned away so as not to face me, as I may get angry and smash it's now useless v1.31 a** with a hammer! >:(
For now, my 655 with v1.21 works solid, and wait's patiently for D-Link to save its outcast brother (v1.31 in the corner) from destruction. ;)
Respectfully,
Tommy Lee

Updated Firmware to 1.31NA final on May 1.
Here is where my issue stands as of 1:54 MTN today.
Everything was done while connected to the 655 via wireless connection:
Did fresh install of "ShareportUtility/ShareportUtility/ShareportUtility_10_4.mpkg" as FatMan suggested was the functional pkg.
Did fresh install of printer Samsung ML 1210 Laser via USB hub directly connected to MacBook Pro Intel and tested printing = Total Success.
Attached USB self-powered hub to 655 and set Shareport to connect on print, sent same small file to printer = Shareport connected, file printed, and printer Window stayed at the 'sending data' status.
In other words, even though the print job was finished, the Mac and Shareport did not recognize this fact and left the dialogue open. Since I was sitting beside the printer etc., I did a manual Shareport dis-connect from printer and everything was happy - except this is not good if one is elsewhere in the house with the Mac on wireless connection which is 99.9% of the time.
So, still plodding along with some joy but still not grinning happily.

It's nice to have a forum topic where EddieZ doesn't come huh? Sorry EddieZ.
Anyway, it's also nice to have fellow Mac users who are from the same planet and can discuss our successes and failures from a common point of view.
I have had my problems in the past firmware updates but with the 1.22b and 1.31 I have been inordinately fortunate--especially so with the last. I know others have not. I have ''tinkered to death'' all sorts of settings and have come to some sort of status quo. I typically back up my settings and update the firmware, then have to re-import the saved settings and all has been well.
SharePort has, however, been almost but not exactly. I wish I had a printer model that was actually supported but I do so little printing anymore I have no use for a new one. I can only speak from the Sony USB thumb drive experience I mentioned in an earlier post.
One thing I would heartily suggest, by the way--as far as attached media via the 655 is to format it as NTFS and then get the NTFS-3G (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10913782 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10913782)) System Preference from VersionTracker. It allows you to function on a mixed network of Wins/Macs quite well--and for asthetics sake, your dive won't have to have a name in all capital letters.
As for the specific trial-and-error suggestions for setting the DIR-655 A3 (my model) with various newer firmwares since 1.21 I'd be glad to share if asked. I'm on a PPPoE/Verizon DSL setup with a Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect modem, so obviously those play a factor. I put the modem in bridge mode and deal only with the 655.
Anyway, that's it for now. Oh, stay away from enabling WISH.
-
This is just a question, not sarcasm or defensive posturing (The Forum is very volatile today!)
What is the downside (Or upside) of WISH in this instance?

When I enable WISH in my configuration it drastically slows down web page resolution (not sure if that's the right word - maybe web page loading is better). It sounded like a good idea and perhaps it should work in theory, but practically it seems to eventually slow things down and when I turn it off, things speed back up to spec.

When are you going to learn we are not hindered by facts here?
I wonder how long that quote will take to be used against me in every last thread I post in.

You guys can teach me all about Mac. I really have no knowledge about them. Not even a pretence... ;)
-
ooops! seems we all ran away! ;)
Seriously, though, I am still concerned about a firm working version of shareport on the 655 using Macs - the easy solution is to buy Time Capsule, or Airport Extreme with an added HD, but I love competition, and am very happy with D-Link gear. BUT the only route I have right now is to update to 1.3* and maybe brick my router, since with the "official" newest FW version in Germany, all is good except my wireless printer takes 20 seconds to react to a print command.
So it would be great when we have a certified European version released to the EU sites that, in general, works with Macs as well. (And, yes, I understand that the EU version is normally the USA version with more languages, but I still don't see the 1.22, that was a beta, being offered here officially, so why is it still frequently suggested as a solution, even if multilingual 1.3* is not ready !)
P.S. and my setup is very boring - no bit torrent-steal-everything-for-free-unless-you-really-use-it-for-business, no VOIP, just Cable that gives internet/phone/TV

OK everyone, What's up! Having problems with the shareport utility here... Everytime my external hd connects, there is an error. Afterwards, it says it is connected but I cannot find the hd in finder. I might try to reinstall shareport and get back to you all... or should I flash my router to firmware 1.21????

Hi - afraid there is no turning back - you cannot downgrade below 1.30 - there are some other threads in this Forum that cover the technical reasons why. And it does not seem that the shareport utility works for all Mac users.
-
Well, nevermind. I reinstalled with 10_4.mkpg ... shareport is working fine now, but I am having a small problem with time machine which has nothing to do with dlink so all is well now, thanks anyways...
-
Glad to hear the shareport is working - may I ask, what is the problem with Timeport? It would be interesting to know as Mac users with a 655 who were not using shareport with a printer might want to use a HD with Timeport
-
Timeport? no, you mean time machine right???? Well actually, I spoke too soon. I had to force quit out of time machine and restart. Now, shareport won't connect, i keep getting the Connection failed box. When I posted the first time, it connected then it disconnected midway through, so that is where my problem started. I am totally at a loss now, we need an update or a new firmware or whatever...
-
My bad - time machine - the word timeport was in my brain for an entirely separate reason :-[
But thanks for the info - it really does not sound like shareport is going to work for regular intel Mac time machine backups based on your experience.

Hi,
I'm on a Macbook OS X 10.5.6 and I'm running the latest 1.31NA firmware. I installed the latest shareport utility for OS X by running SharePortUtility_10_4. The file Cosetup did nothing for me. I was able to plug in SandDisk USB Cruzer 2.0 GB stick. Was able to write an 87MB .mov file and was able to watch it. It transfered at a rate of 1.1MB/s (8.8 Mbps) which is quite slow. Now the moment I tried to seek a specific spot in the movie, Finder just gave me the rainbow circle and I couldn't even reboot.
The firmware 1.31NA in itself has been working fine for me, but the initial release of the SharePort utility for OS X is very buggy. Use it if you want to play around with, but I wouldn't trust it for data that is important. Anyone also having the same issue?

Hi,
I'm on a Macbook OS X 10.5.6 and I'm running the latest 1.31NA firmware.

I'm with you about the shareport utility being buggy. I have the same setup Macbook 5,1 OS X 10.5.6 and about the same issues... even my printer will stop working after a simple test. Since I also have a PC that work just great with my share drive and printer I can only point my finger at the shareport utility!

Thanks Guitren - the fact that the Windows side works well, but the Mac side does not, indeed seems to point to a problem with the Mac version of the shareport. By the way, which version of the 655 do you have - seems from some other PC threads that the A3 & A4 have a higher problem rate, and in one thread it was suggested it may be connected to the energy-saving properties of these versions, where an unused USB port (Or at least one the router thinks is unused!) is powered down. Interesting theory.

Interesting theory. Btw, his signature says A2. Mine is A3 as per my signature.

Ah! missed that! - Ok, Guitren not having problems on the PC side with an A2 again strengthens the argument that it may be a version problem with PC's.
But, as you said, the Mac problems seem to point strongly at a fault with the shareport utility.
