Title: Does the DNS-325 run hot?
Post by: domi on August 19, 2011, 10:33:08 PM
Hi!

I'm considering getting a DNS-325 and putting two 2 TB Seagate Barracuda Green (http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds1726_barracuda_green.pdf) drives (ST2000DL003) in it.

According to a PC Magazine review (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390534,00.asp), the DNS-325 is "warm to touch after several hours of uptime", which is listed as a con.

What is your experience with the DSN-325? Does it get unusually/unhealthily hot when it's merely idle? My assumption is that the "green" drives should have a reduce power consumption.

Thanks,

Dominique

Perhaps several hours of "up-time" means that the drives are in constant use. Under those conditions the unit probably gets warm(ish). If the unit is idle it (well, mine) remains at room temperature and feels cool to the touch. My 325s are certainly cooler than my 320s.

It really depends on how the unit is used and what you call "warm" and "hot".

Thanks for your reassuring reply! I plan to use the DNS-325 mostly for backup purposes and I don't expect it to get very busy. Yes, I know I could get a 320 instead, but the price difference over here is very small.

Determining that the DNS-325 runs too hot is a very subjective conclusion. Some questions for the reviewer: What was the ambient room temperature during the test? Was the DNS-325 in an open room or enclosed area (i.e. closet)? What were the DNS-325 fan settings? Were the HDDs actively accessed during the duration of the test? What were the sleep/hibernation settings? How many HDDs were spun-up (1 or 2)?

"Warm to the touch" is very subjective and doesn't mean too much to me without further clarification and quantification.

Thanks! I agree with you "warm to the touch" is vague, especially when expressed with no information about the testing conditions. I'm planning to put the DNS-325 in an open room with a temperature around 20 Celsius. Also, the kind of use I have in mind shouldn't be too stressful for the drives. Can the drives in a DNS-325 be put to sleep if there's no activity for X minutes?

Yes. Here is a link to the DNS-325 web interface emulator so you can virtually play with the unit before your purchase: http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dns325/101/login.html

In normal operation if you notice some heat. But I understand that is normal.

In setting the option to make automatic fan operation, Low or high. In this way, always at least Low heat and no NOTHING.
In automatic, off / low / high is heated but the fan turns on when needed.

The working temperature with off / low / high is around 40 º C ... normal??

The DNS-325 user manual states the following: "When the unit is first powered on the fans rotate at a low speed and rotates at a high speed when the temperature rises above 49 °C." This statement implies that temperatures below 49 degrees C are acceptable.
