Title: DIR-651 keeps dropping wireless connections
Post by: bigric on August 22, 2011, 12:51:33 PM
I've got a DIR-651 that does one of two things regularly:
1--drops all wireless connections momentarily, then re-establishes them (happens multiple times a day)
2--drops all wireless connections and has to be reset (happens every 0.5-2 days)

#1 wouldn't be a big deal, except that I keep VPN connections on two systems and have to re-establish them every time this happens.  I should probably also note that this happens even on the weekends, when those two systems are not VPN'd in.

It has done this since day 1, and the firmware update did not help.

What HW version is your router? A1
What FW version is currently loaded? 1.01NA

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. done
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP. done

What wireless modes are you using? mixed B/G
What security mode are you using? WPA-Personal
What wireless devices do you have connected? 3 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 Blackberries, 1 printer
Any cordless house phones? yes, DECT 6.0.  Did not interfere with previous Netgear or 2Wire routers.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? up to 5 others, but they are all far away and my house has thick stone exterior walls

Wireless mode is set currently for B and G..are there B mode devices that you need B mode for? If not, try Single mode G to test, then try Mixed G and N if you have any N supported devices.

Might check InSSIDer application to see near by wireless routers and there channels. Change yours to something not in use.

Is Wireless LAN Partition enabled? Disable it.
Disable Short GI.

Let us know.

Thanks for the assist.  Both of those were already disabled as well.  I switched from G/N to G/B when I was writing the first post and I haven't been dropped yet, but I'll switch it to G since I don't have any B devices.

Try single mode N to test if you can.

Let us know.

Darn, ok then. G should work great for you though.  ;D

Switched to G only and the song remains the same.  Had to reboot the router this time.

OK, heres the next suggestion...
I would turn off ALL wireless devices, accept for one to test of your choice.

With the router at the current G mode. Test out the connection and do some surfing or streaming.
Turn off this device and go to the next and test. Do this for each device you have. See if you notice anything.

Next Turn on two devices and test. Graduate turning on all devices as you test and see if the router exhibits anything.

You might find a culprit here possibly.
