Title: NEED HELP P2P KILLS MY INTERNET!
Post by: hydros13 on August 31, 2011, 01:05:40 PM
First of all hello,

I just bought my DGL 4500 and Im pretty happy with the speeds im getting, Im using DSL 4MB/754kb, my network is pretty stable, my only concern is the following:

Whenever I start loading a video, downloading something P2P, the internet drops to cero in all my network including me, I can only watch the video or download the file because not even the browser will show anything.  Worth noting that this doesnt happen when Im downloading direcly from http link at full speed (Megaupload, rapidshare , to name a few...).

So I would like to know what should I do to fix this problem and to be able to watch videos, download files and still be able to use my internet for browsing and playing?

Thomson 585v8 DSL modem conected as BRIDGE to the router.
Im using FW 1.15 (A1 Unit), Gamefuel ON, upload speed setup to what my ISP is providing me.

You need to setup reserved IP addresses for your devices on the router.
Then I would add a gamefuel rule for the devices that are doing P2P and the others that are not. Give a lower priority(100-200) to the P2P device and give a higher priority to the other devices that don't P2P, (1-50).

could you not just lower the bandwidth your P2P program is using rather than mess around with the router. When I use Bittorrent, I just lower my download Bandwidwith so I can surf the internet or I just do my P2P crap at night when I'm sleeping.

The problem is this, whenever anyone in the house starts streamin***outube video or megavideo, we all get booted :S so I would like to know if there is a solution to that. BTW all my IPs are static atm :D

Thanks for the fast replies.

Sounds like you need to put everyone in gamefuel and set up some priorities so that the router can help everyone get equal bandwidth.
Some other things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Basic/Internet/Manual?
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Basic/Internet/Manul.
Turn on DNS Relay under Basic/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Hello once more,

Im going to call my ISP to provide me with the DNS so I can fill them. Everything else is the way you asked me (Didnt have to change anything). My wireless is single G mode with WPA2 with AES encryption mode.

I really dont know how to setup the rules for gamefuel, but basically this is my network :

192.168.0.194 PC Heavy gaming and media (Wireless)
192.168.0.195 PC Heavy gaming and media (Wired)
192.168.0.196 PC Heavy gaming and media (Wireless)
192.168.0.197 Ipad Media and browsing (Wireless)
192.168.0.198 Ipad Media and browsing (Wireless)

All setup to static.

**Just confirmed that direct downloads work nicely I can be downloading at my top speed and if anyone else uses the internet they can play or browse perfectly, but in the opposite side when I get a download be it streaming video or download patches from WoW or LoL wich work in p2p inteface, they basically steal all the bandwith :S, help!.
Thanks a lot for the help, I really appretiate it.

I would look at your P2P software to see if there is options to limit what the P2P sw is doing while downloading and such. If it's hogging most of the bandwidth, I would start there and see if you can cut back on what it does.

Can I somehow limit youtube?

will need to probably set up gamefuel rules for this. Can review the XBL gameing sticky for examples of adding a PC to the rule. Pretty easy to do.

let us know if you need help. Can also help you check your router using Teamviewer.com

Teamviewer.com shares router Bios information?

am definitely looking into that...

but to answer your question about limiting youtube, no, you can limit access to internet for the clients on your network, but you cannot limit what youtube does, limiting the access for your clients will seem like you are limiting youtube though.

all this endpoint independant, endpoint restricted etc stuff i've never seen any change in speeds from.  ive even disabled the entire firewall for a month, and never seen an increase or decrease in speed, so i'm skeptical on that method, no offense or belittling intended FurryNutz

+1

Lowering priority on a connection doesn't mean it slows it down, it just gives the port a lower priority on NAT calculations. If the bandwidth is available, and the connection demands it, it still gives it. What would be better is set up some rules among you household of when some people can do what. I know this sounds archaic, actually talking to you roommates, but its probably the way to go. ::grin::

Firewall will not effect any increase or decrease in speed, again SPI and Firewall is only looking for malicious or blocked packets. It only seems  to effect certain types of connections with certain games and applications. One if them is BF2 for PC. Default settings don't work with BF2, setting to Endpoint Independent resolves this issue. Only reason I have used these settings is from my research years ago on trying to find who at the time knew about Gamefule and how others were using it since it's not enbled out of the box.
