Title: Can't get it to work

Hi guys

i bought the D-link dir-655 a few days ago but i can't get it to work
i have a standalone cable modem at home, unplugged everthing from my old router the linksys WRT54G to my D-link, turned off everything and let my modem start up, after that it turned on the router and then i boot my laptop wired to the D-link.
i used the disc and even manual setup but everytime i got no internet connection wired and wireless, setup the SSID and WPA2 security when i look at available connections my SSID says D-link, but when i connect it says D-link 2.. never seen that before ???
maybe i forgot something,

i hope you guys can help me out :-*

Can you get online wired?

Can you atleast see the network even if can't connect? Can you connect, even if you can't get online?

i can connect to my router wired/wireless but i have no internet connection wired/wireless thats my problem

What kind of connection does your ISP provide. The default setting for DIR-655 (and most routers) is DHCP, but most of the time it's required that you choose another option and configure it properly, like PPPoE or Static IP. You can connect your old WRT54G back and see what settings it used.

Whats your ISP and what kind of modem do you have?

Start > Run > CMD > Ipconfig > What is your IP (or IPv4) address?

Sure you have the ethernet from the modem into the WAN port?

When you run the disc, does it say it worked? If not, what kind of error does it give?

Is it multiple computers that can't get online?

on my old linksys router i had DHCP and everything worked fine for about a couple of weeks ago so i bought this D-link

if i run the disc i can setup everything just fine, i did everything the setup asked me to do

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Wan IP, Gateway, Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses should have some numbers and should not be all zeros. If they are zeros, then the router isn't getting any information from the ISP Modem and is not ether connected right or the ISP modem isn't connected right or configured.

Are you on cable or DSL service?
What ISP modem do you have? Make and model?

Ok, if everything is zero'd then you need to make sure the ISP Modem is set up and connected to the 655 router well. I would swap cables between them to be sure. I have seen that sometimes the cables included with Modems and routers are not the best.

Start by powering off both modem and router. Swap cables with a good known working one. Power on modem and let it sync with ISP. Then power on router. Keep checking that Status page. Those zeros should change to something other than zeros.

i did what you said, waited a couple of minuts and i thank you i got internet :D!
